No Deposit Poker Bonuses – Are They Worth the Hassle?

Nikki Hanlon : February 8th, 2012

The basic idea of a no deposit poker bonus is, of course, appealing to almost all online poker players.  Playing poker involves risking money, and if you could potentially win money without risking money you’d be almost a fool not to.

Of course, nothing in life is that simple.  No deposit poker bonuses, also frequently referred to as free bankrolls, do come with a small cost: Your time.  You have to create an account and often provide additional information such as mobile phone verification or a scan of your ID.  There are often other small hoops, such as a waiting period before you get your bankroll.

There are minor issues, but they become larger for some players –  namely, real money poker players for whom the typical bankroll amount is not a significant amount of money.  Free bankrolls tend to range between $5 and $100, and there are honestly some player who just aren’t interested in going through what they perceive to be a potential hassle for that kind of reward.

Most players should eschew this attitude.  Poker is about making money, and it doesn’t really matter how that money is made.  If they money is made because you got someone all in preflop with KK when you had AA, you don’t complain –  even though you’ll give that money back when the roles are reversed.  So why should you complain when a poker room is willing to boost your bankroll with money that’s generally not going to be taken away?

If you’re a high roller who plays $5/$10 NL and above, free bankrolls might not make sense as a use of your time.  For everyone else, however, playing no deposit poker is a great way to supplement your bankroll and to try a new room in the process.

You never know –  that could just be the room that really clicks with your style of play, and the free bankroll could quickly turn into a serious one.
