This week in the early stage of the football season in England, the big boys from the Premier League will get their campaign underway in the Carabao Cup. The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool are amongst the teams staring their quest for another piece of silverware this week against fellow Premier League and a number of lower league opponents.

Games take place from Tuesday through to Thursday night across the week and the action begins with a rare London derby as lower league Leyton Orient take on Tottenham Hotspur at Brisbane Road. Manchester United face a trip to Luton while Liverpool head east to take on Lincoln City at Sincil Bank. The biggest game of the week pits Arsenal against Leicester in what should be an interesting matchup.

It may well be the third most important of the domestic trophies for the top teams, but there is no doubt that landing the Carabao Cup as a prize this coming season will feature strongly in the thoughts of all teams, even if they do rest players for games. Let’s now take a look at the games in the Carabao Cup taking place this coming week.

Carabao Cup Third Round – 7.45 kick off unless stated

Tuesday 22nd September

  • Leyton Orient v Tottenham (6.00)
  • West Brom v Brentford (7.00)
  • Newport County v Watford (7.00)
  • West Ham v Hull City (7.30)
  • Luton Town v Manchester United (8.15)

The pick of the games on Tuesday evening see two of the Premier League’s biggest teams facing off against lower league opposition on the road. Spurs start their campaign away to London rivals Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road, while a little north of the capital and a couple of hours later will see Manchester United take on Luton Town who have made a decent start in the Championship this season.

West Brom face a very tricky home game against Championship playoff finalists Brentford in what could well be a tough night for the home side at the Hawthorns, while West Ham take on Hull City in a game that David Moyes team will feel is a must win game given their poor start to the season. The final game is a non-Premier League affair as Watford face Newport with the Hornets favourites to progress.

Tips to progress – Tottenham, West Brom, Watford, West Ham, Man United

Wednesday 23rd September

  • Stoke City v Gillingham (7.00)
  • Fulham v Sheffield Wednesday (7.00)
  • Millwall v Burnley (7.00)
  • Preston v Brighton (7.00)
  • Fleetwood Town v Everton
  • Morecambe v Newcastle
  • Chelsea v Barnsley
  • Leicester City v Arsenal

Half of the games in the third round of the Carabao Cup take place on Wednesday evening this week starting with four games at 7.00pm and then four more kicking off at 7.45pm. There are some tough assignments in the early games for the Premier League sides with Burnley and Brighton having tough away games against Championship sides Millwall and Preston respectively. Fulham, badly needing a win, will get a chance to do that against Sheffield Wednesday while Stoke take on Gillingham in the other early game with the Potters favourites to come through against their Kent-based rivals.

Two Premier League teams have tough opponents on the road from the lower leagues in the later kick offs, with Everton travelling to Fleetwood and Newcastle also heading to the West coast to face Morecambe. Chelsea should come through comfortably at home to Barnsley but the final game is arguably the best game of the round as Arsenal head north to take on Leicester City in what should be a cracking all Premier League affair.

Tips to Progress – Stoke, Fulham, Burnley, Preston, Everton, Newcastle, Chelsea, Arsenal

Thursday 24th September

  • Bristol City v Aston Villa (7.00)
  • Lincoln City v Liverpool
  • Man City v Bournemouth

The last three games of the week in the Carabao Cup see Aston Villa face a very tricky trip to take on Bristol City in what could be a potential giantkilling. The other two games should not be though as Premier League Champions Liverpool face Lincoln on the road while at the same time Manchester City face Bournemouth at the Etihad.

Tips to progress – Bristol City, Liverpool, Man City

Carabao Cup Outright Winner Market

  • Manchester City – 3/1 favourites
  • Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton – 8/1
  • Manchester United – 9/1
  • Tottenham – 10/1
  • Arsenal – 14/1
  • Leicester, West Brom – 20/1
  • Burnley, Brighton – 25/1
  • West Ham, Newcastle Utd, Aston Villa – 28/1
  • Fulham 33/1
  • 40-1 bar.

Manchester City are the current holders of the Carabao Cup trophy and they are the bookmakers favourites to earn the top prize once again. There is a good logic to that, with City playing very strong teams throughout the tournament due to the size and quality of their squad, plus Pep Guardiola will often play regular first teamers in these games too, while their rivals tend to play weaker teams especially in these early rounds of the tournament.

An interesting bet is the three 8/1 teams as you can make a case for either of them doing well. Everton have been in g reat form since the start of the season, Liverpool are long overdue a strong showing in a cup competition domestically while Chelsea’s new additions should give them a very strong squad that is able to compete on terms with City this season. For me though, City remain the clear favourites here though I would take an each way punt on Chelsea.
