It means that the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Red Bull Leipzig, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen will restart their battle for top spot in the league, while the likes of Paderborn, Werder Bremen, Fortuna Dusseldorf, FSV Mainz and FC Augsburg will be amongst those seeking to stave off relegation to the Bundesliga II.

Bundesliga I – Matchday 26 Preview and Tips

FC Augsburg v Vfl Wolfsburg

There’s usually a fair few goals in Augsburg home games, with 20 of their last 22 games seeing over 2.5 goals scored. Wolfsburg will be hoping to capitalise on that defensive inability to pick up points that will see them move towards the European qualification spots in the league. Augsburg have struggled for form this season but have a new manager in Heiko Herrlich and it remains to be seen what effect the ex-Dortmund man will have at the helm. Wolfsburg won both games last season, 3-2 in Augburg and 8-1 at home. At 5/4 Wolfsburg are my pick to land the win here.

Borussia Dortmund v Schalke 04

The Revierderby is the biggest game of the weekend in Germany and there is little love lost between Schalke and Dortmund. It is also second in the table taking on sixth after a much-improved performance from Schalke 04 this season has seen them climb the table after flirting with relegation last season. Dortmund do not have the best record at home to Schalke in recent years, drawing one and losing one of the last two, but at odds of 1/2, I expect Dortmund to be winners this time around.

Fortuna Dusseldorf v Paderborn

This is a real relegation six-pointer for these teams, with Paderborn the team most in need of points with just 16 so far this season. Dusseldorf have 22 but are four points adrift of Mainz above them and I they are to avoid a playoff, they need to close that gap. Both sides are not the best defensively, but I feel at home Dusseldorf will just about have the edge. Back the home side for a narrow nervy win at 11/10.

Red Bull Leipzig v SC Freiburg

Third takes on eighth in the. Bundesliga in Leipzig this weekend. Red Bull are already through to the Champions League quarterfinals, while Freiburg have performed above expectation to lie in the top half of the table. However, their Bundesliga form had not been the best with just two wins from their last seven games, so Freiburg will feel they have a chance. However, with Timo Werner always a danger against Freiburg (10 goals in 11 games against them) I do expect Red Bull to be the ones picking up the points this weekend at odds of 3/10.

TSG Hoffenheim v Hertha Berlin

Hoffenheim’s ability to convert more draws into wins has seen them take seven more points this season than Hertha Berlin who have drawn as many games as they have won (7). Ninth in the table, I expect Hoffenheim to be the stronger of the two teams here and I also feel they have a better squad in depth than their opponents. It will be close, but take Hoffenheim for the win at Even money.

Eintracht Frankfurt v Borussia Moenchengladbach

After being one of the surprise teams in the Bundesliga and Europe last season, a number of key players leaving has affected Frankfurt’s performances this year and they lie in 12th position. Borussia on the other hand lie in fourth and have been one of the more consistent performers in the Bundesliga this year. However, Frankfurt are showing signs of finding some better form in their last few games, so I think this one has the hallmarks of a draw at 13/5 with bet365.

FC Cologne v FSV Mainz

A win for Mainz here would move them up the table and just three points behind mid-table Cologne in what should be an interesting contest. Mainz defence has been their biggest problem this season, conceding 53 goals. Cologne are a decent side at home and they don’t draw too many games, just two this season. With that in mind, I think the home side will take the honours here. Back Cologne for the win at 19/20.

Union Berlin v Bayern Munich

The league leaders Bayern Munich have been in great form and have scored more goals and conceded fewer than any team in the Bundesliga. Union Berlin have done well to lie 11th in the table this season but this is a huge ask against the most successful, richest and most prestigious of all Bundesliga teams. It would be a huge shock if Bayern don’t get anything less than a win here and I can’t see this one being a surprise. Take Bayern for a comfortable win at 1/5.

Werder Bremen v Bayer Leverkusen

A few years ago, this would likely have been a clash between teams at the top of the table and while Leverkusen remain in that position, Bremen’s fortunes have dipped alarmingly to the point where they are in real threat of relegation. Leverkusen are pushing hard for a top four finish and a Champions League place next season and I expect them to come away with all the points here. Back Leverkusen to win at 3/4.
