Football fans in England, as well as those across the world, that keep abreast of the action in the Premier League have had longer to wait than most for their beloved league to return back to action, but from Wednesday 17th June, the season will restart once again. Aston Villa will face Sheffield United in the first game of the day, with the evening fixture being a cracker as Manchester City take on Arsenal at the Etihad.

Both of these fixtures are the games-in-hand that the four teams have on the remaining teams in the Premier League and it means that once they have been played, all teams will have played 29 games of the season, with nine more to play over the coming weeks. Matches will be played almost every day of the week over the coming weeks to ensure that the season can be completed in around 5-6 weeks.

Premier League – To Be Resolved?

There are essentially three storylines still to be resolved in the Premier League, although one of these is a mere formality. Here’s the main issues that will be resolved over the coming weeks.

  • Crowning of the Champions

Liverpool are currently 25 points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table and need just six more points to be confirmed Champions (assuming City win all their remaining games). As such, it is not really a question of if Liverpool will win the title, but when. That could come at home against Crystal Palace, or if Man City lose to Arsenal, it could even be away to Everton this coming weekend.

  • The Race for Champions & Europa League Places

While Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City look well placed for qualifying for the Champions League next season, that does mean there is at least one spot up for grabs in the prestigious competition next season. At the moment Chelsea occupy that spot but they are being chased by the likes of Manchester United, Wolves, Sheffield United, Tottenham and Arsenal. Seeing who ends up in fourth, who settles for a Europa League spot and who misses out altogether should be interesting.

  • The Battle to Stave off Relegation

The six teams from Brighton in 15th, through West Ham, Watford, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and lastly Norwich City are likely to be the teams battling it out to avoid relegation. With just four points between Aston Villa in 19th and Brighton in 15th, and a number of key battles between these teams coming up over the coming weeks, it promises to be a nail-biting end to the season for these fans. Norwich do already look doomed, but who will likely join them back in the Championship next season?

Midweek Games In Hand and Matchday 30 Fixtures and Tips

Wednesday 17th June

  • Aston Villa v Sheffield United (6pm)

A big game for both teams, Villa badly need points to stave off the threat of relegation, United to keep in touch with the top four and the European places. The Blades are the team in form of the two and with home advantage somewhat negated by a lack of fans, I am backing them to claim the win here. Tip – Sheff Utd to win – 5/4.

  • Manchester City v Arsenal (8.15pm)

Arsenal have been better in the EPL of late and have not been beaten in a good few games under Mikel Arteta, but I expect that to come to an end here against Arteta’s former employers, who may not be in with a chance of retaining the league title, but who can still win the FA Cup and Champions League this season. – Tip – Man City to win and both teams to score – 6/4.

Friday 19th June

  • Norwich City v Southampton (6pm)

Norwich have to start picking up wins and they may feel this is a great opportunity against a Southampton side not in the best of form, however I just feel Saints have the capability to drag something out of this game and while it may not be all three points, a draw would suit them more than it will Norwich at this point of the season. Tip – Draw – 13/5.

  • Tottenham v Manchester United (8.15pm)

This game could have massive significance in the race for a Champions League spot, a win for Spurs dents United’s hopes and catapults Spurs back into the reckoning, a win for United puts Spurs likely out of contention and vastly strengthens the Red Devils case. While a draw will likely be a better result for Chelsea, Sheff Utd and Wolves. This could be a close one but I just feel United’s better form will be key here. Tip – Man Utd to win – 7/5.

Saturday 20th June

  • Watford v Leicester City (12.30pm)

Watford have found some improved form of late but they face a tricky game here against a Leicester City side who are chasing hard for a Champions League spot next season. I think the Foxes will get that as they have a solid advantage and I can see them at least maintaining that position with a solid win here. Tip – Leicester City to win – 23/20.

  • Brighton v Arsenal (3pm)

After travelling north to face Man City on Wednesday, Arsenal are back in action on the south coast against a Brighton side desperate for points. The Seagulls have done well against Arsenal at home in recent times, but I feel the Gunners will pick up the points here. Tip – Arsenal to win – 21/20.

  • West Ham v Wolves (5.30pm)

West Ham should be much higher than they are in the table but they have struggled in games like this and I think this could be another battle for them. Wolves look strong and dangerous on the counter and I can see the visitors getting something from this game, although I am backing West Ham to snatch a point. Tip – Draw – 12/5.

  • Bournemouth v Crystal Palace (7.45pm)

Crystal Palace’s better form has move them away from the drop zone, while Bournemouth fell into it before the break. This is a crucial match for the home side, but I think Palace have enough quality to keep things very tight. One goal either way may decide this, but I just have a feeling that a draw is the most likely outcome. Tip – Draw – 23/10.

Sunday 21st June

  • Newcastle United v Sheffield United (2pm)

With all the confusion over the sale of the club, it is going to be interesting to see how focused Newcastle are for this game. Sheffield United are in great shape at the moment and they don’t concede many goals. That said, neither do Newcastle and in truth, I do feel that this is another game that could end up all square. Tip – Draw – 11/5.

  • Aston Villa v Chelsea (4.15pm)

It’s not an easy start back for Villa taking on Sheff Utd and then Chelsea at home, especially given their poor form. Chelsea need the win to keep up their Champions League qualification hopes and I think Frank Lampard’s men will manage to achieve that here against a Villa side who look badly out of sorts. Tip – Chelsea to win – 8/15.

  • Everton v Liverpool (7pm)

It will be one the quietest ever Merseyside derbies at Goodison this Sunday night as Everton seek to gain revenge after a 5-2 loss at Anfield. That said, Liverpool need just six more points to clinch the title and I think Jurgen Klopp will want to get that finished asap. The Reds have looked great in friendlies and I am backing them to clinch the win here. Tip – Liverpool to win – 8/15.

Monday 22nd June

  • Manchester City v Burnley (8pm)

Burnley shocked the other Manchester club, United, back in January earning a 2-0 win at Old Trafford, but I can’t see Sean Dyche’s men repeating that here. City’s second home game in a row and I think Guardiola’s men will be keen to make it a maximum six points taken from those two games with a win here. Tip – Man City to win to nil – 10/11.
