Last season in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs ended a long wait for another Superbowl victory when Patrick Mahomes led his team to victory over the San Francisco 49ers in what was a fantastic end to an exciting season. The Chiefs are one of a number of teams that the bookies have as being genuine Superbowl contenders once again this season, with the action getting underway in the early hours of Friday 11th September UK time with the Chiefs in action against the Houston Texans.

That game will be the first of the new NFL season with a number of other games taking place in the usual times on Sunday evening and into Monday morning, plus two fixtures taking place on Tuesday morning too, including Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the New York Giants.

Let’s now take a look at each of the eight divisions and give you our tip to win each, before we give you our pick for the teams to make it to postseason in each conference and who will end up as Superbowl Champions in February 2021.

AFC Divisions

The odds shown here are to win the division and were correct with bet365 as of 2.20pm on Monday 31st August 2020. My pick in each division is highlighted in Italics.

AFC North

  • New England Patriots – 6/5
  • Buffalo Bills – 6/5
  • New York Jets – 17/2
  • Miami Dolphins – 9/1

This has perennially been New England’s division but with Tim Brady now plying his trade for the Buccaneers, will the Patriots be able to fend off a talented Buffalo Bills side who pushed the Pats hard last season? I am not so sure they will and as such, I am backing Buffalo to end the Patriots dominance of this division.

AFC East

  • Baltimore Ravens – 5/13
  • Pittsburgh Steelers – 4/1
  • Cleveland Browns – 11/2
  • Cincinnati Bengals – 28/1

For me this is one of the two divisions in the AFC that is cut and dried. Cleveland still look some way away from being a playoff team and Pittsburgh are still rebuilding, while Cincinnati are miles away. Baltimore are the outstanding team in this division by a considerable distance and I think they will comfortably qualify in the east.

AFC South

  • Indianapolis Colts – 6/5
  • Tennessee Titans – 6/4
  • Houston Texans – 7/2
  • Jacksonville Jaguars – 25/1

This should be a keenly contested division and while I don’t think the Jaguars will feature in the reckoning, and I think the Texans are markedly weaker after some unusual roster moves in the off-season, I think the Titans and Colts will battle it out and while the Colts are the favourites, I think Tennessee’s power running game could be the difference maker in this division.

AFC West

  • Kansas City Chiefs – 2/9
  • Los Angeles Chargers – 15/2
  • Denver Broncos – 9/1
  • Las Vegas Raiders – 11/1

You would have to be mad to back against the Chiefs in this division. The Chargers are about the only serious competition in this division with the Broncos and Raiders well off the pace required to be a playoff team. As such, I expect the Chiefs to dominate this division and rather like the Ravens, qualify for the playoffs relatively comfortably.

NFC Divisions

NFC North

  • Minnesota Vikings – 6/4
  • Green Bay Packers – 17/10
  • Chicago Bears – 21/5
  • Detroit Lions – 11/2

The NFC North could be the most open of all the division’s in the NFL this season and you can see that from the odds on display. I discount the Lions as, well they are the Lions and always seem to find a way to foul things up. I am not overly convinced by the Vikings or Packers so I am going for an outside bet here and the Bears to make it into the preseason as divisional champions.

NFC East

  • Dallas Cowboys – 4/5
  • Philadelphia Eagles – 27/20
  • New York Giants – 12/1
  • Washington Football Team – 18/1

This is a two-horse race in the NFC East as the newly named Washington Football Team and New York Giants don’t really look like genuine playoff contenders. The Cowboys are 4/5 with the bookmakers but I really can’t understand why that is the case as I feel the Eagles are the standout pick in this group.

NFC South

  • New Orleans Saints – 10/13
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 8/5
  • Atlanta Falcons – 7/1
  • Carolina Panthers – 22/1

For me this is a straight choice between two of the best quarterbacks to play the game. Drew Brees has more weaponry at his disposal and is well settled at the Saints, whereas Tom Brady, the GOAT according to some, may find things a little trickier at the Buccaneers. As such, I fancy the Saints to claim the division here, but it may be closer than many people expect.

NFC West

  • San Francisco 49ers – Evens
  • Seattle Seahawks – 21/10
  • Los Angeles Rams – 9/2
  • Arizona Cardinals – 8/1

In terms of sheer quality of the four teams, the NFC West is arguably the toughest division in football along with the AFC South. The Rams, Seahawks and 49ers will all feel they stand a chance here but I think the 49ers showed their quality last season and I feel they will win the division once again but I expect at least one Wildcard qualifier to come from this division too.

Playoff Qualifiers

  • AFC – Chiefs, Ravens, Titans, Bills – Wildcards – Colts, Patriots
  • NFC – Bears, Eagles, Saints, 49ers – Wildcards – Buccaneers, Seahawks

Superbowl Winners Tip

At the present moment, the bookies have the Chiefs and Ravens as the joint 6/1 favourites to win the Superbowl this year and it is hard to argue against that. Both are the class acts in the AFC and it is hard to see either of them losing the Superbowl should they get there. I’d back the Ravens to land the win if they can land home advantage in the playoffs. However, if you fancy an outside bet at longer odds, do not rule out the Tennessee Titans at 25/1. They shone in the playoffs last season and if they can win the very tough AFC South, they have the running game to worry any team. If their defence can improve then they could be a real threat in the post-season.
