Use ten offline study checks for poker rules, ranges, betting assumptions, draw probabilities and kickers, with two original Hold’em examples.

Learning poker means checking rules and reasoning, not following ten instructions that promise quick winnings. The exercises below can be done with paper cards or a saved hand, away from live play. They do not require a deposit, a new table or a target number of sessions.
Identify the variant, betting structure and date of a book, podcast or lesson before borrowing its advice. Tournament decisions and cash-game decisions can have different assumptions. A famous author’s name does not make every example applicable to your table. Prefer material that explains its inputs, acknowledges uncertainty and distinguishes rules from strategic opinion.
Start with the official PokerStars Hold’em rules for ordinary Hold’em and bet365’s UK standard rules for its house requirements. BCP’s poker glossary explains unfamiliar terms. These are references to read, not a claim that BCP has tested a particular player’s strategy.
A range is a set of possible hands, not permission to play every one of them. Ask which position, number of players, earlier actions and effective stacks an example assumes. Replacing a wide range with “premium hands only” does not prove that every resulting decision is correct. Record what is unknown rather than inventing a fixed chart for every game.
An earlier contribution to a pot cannot be recovered simply by calling again. Review the extra cost and possible outcomes of the decision now in front of you. That does not mean always folding when an opponent might be ahead; uncertainty about a range is different from knowing you cannot win. Money spent is not an obligation to continue.
A value bet aims for weaker hands to call; a bluff aims for stronger hands to fold. PokerStars’ value-betting lesson explains why the hands that continue matter. “Bluff rarely” is not a complete model, and a stronger hand is not automatically impossible to bluff. Write down the response you assumed and the evidence for it before evaluating a saved hand.
A card can improve your combination without giving you the best hand. Specify the known cards, unseen cards and exact event being counted. BCP’s pocket-sixes exercise separates a six appearing on the flop from one appearing anywhere on the complete board. Neither probability is a forecast of winning the pot or a reason to buy another card.
In a fictional Hold’em hand, Player A has A♣ 5♥ and Player B has A♦ Q♠. The board is A♥ 10♣ 10♦ 7♠ 2♥. Both have aces and tens; B’s queen is the fifth card and beats A’s seven. A’s five is not used in the best five-card hand.
Change only the board’s 7♠ to K♠. Both players now use two aces, two tens and the king, so they tie. All cards within each example are distinct. The exercise uses the standard best-five-card rule, not a played hand or a prediction that an ace with a small second card is always strong.
A tournament labelled “freeroll” still needs its eligibility, entry and time requirements checked. Do not assume that a label establishes zero associated spending or that every event is available to you. Learning does not require registering for all possible tournaments. A paper exercise avoids those entry decisions altogether.
Compare cash-game chips with tournament chips, and ordinary Hold’em with variants requiring a different number of hole cards. A shorter-looking format is not a guaranteed quick session. You can compare written rules without trying every variant for real money or increasing simultaneous play.
If a result makes you want to recover money immediately, stop rather than treating the next hand as a remedy. NHS gambling-harm guidance warns against treating gambling as income and identifies chasing losses as a warning sign. Studying a game is not a reason to ignore concerns about your gambling.
For one saved hand, record the actions, cards actually shown, costs and assumptions. Separate an unfavourable outcome from proof that a decision was wrong: a single result cannot establish a strategy’s long-term performance. If key information is absent, leave the conclusion unresolved. Comparing explanations is useful; claiming certainty without the inputs is not.
Keep study separate from an ongoing game. Bet365’s UK rules prohibit software that automates play or supplies real-time information or facilities assisting ongoing games. These exercises are for offline review, not permission to keep a live decision tool open. No checklist guarantees winnings or requires continued gambling.
