Knock out tournaments are SO GOD DAMN FUN. We can't get enough of them, if we're being honest.
So today we're going to give you some of the key facts you need to know to be fully informed about this fantastic format. Then you can play them to your heart's content.
With most tournament types, there you only get a cash prize if you make it past the bubble and are among the top players of the tournament. We've all heard stories where players have been really strong throughout the whole game, only to get knocked out just before the prizes are dished out.
However, knock out tournaments award cash prizes every single time you knock a player out. This is on top of any prize you might win if you make it past the bubble.
Because you can win cash throughout, knockouts are often seen as a great way for smart players to guard against big losses. However, it's worth noting how much the bounties are worth. In some tournaments, the bounties are worth 50% of the buy in, whereas in others, it's more like 20%. That means you'll need two knockouts to break even or five, depending on what kind you're playing.
In some places, you'll see this tournament type referred to as knock out. Then elsewhere they'll be called bounty tournaments. Don't fret, both of these things are the same.
Because you get a reward for every player you knock out, knock out tournaments are particularly suited to players who are aggressive. That's because they go in for the kill more often. Obviously, there's always the chance that you lose out, but when it pays off, you can incrementally reap the rewards throughout the game. Read more about player types here.
Progressive knock out tournaments are a little different from a regular one. For the most part, they play out like the knock outs we've just been talking about. But there's one crucial difference. The bounty on each players head is split. Part of it goes straight into your pocket when you knock them out. And part of it is added on to your bounty. Think of your bounty now as a little like a progressive jackpot in slots.
That means the more players you knock out, the bigger your bounty. And effectively, the bigger incentive people have to come after you. It can lead to a whole lot of fun, let me tell you.
Pot odds are always important when it comes to poker tournaments and with knockouts, it's no different. Figure out how much the bounty is worth in chips (using the starting stack you got for your buy-in as the base line and working out how much chips translates to the value of the bounty). Then add that to the pot odds as you play your hand.
