NFL Week Five Review And Week Six NFL Betting Tips

By Ian John
October 23, 2023

Week Five of the NFL Season is now over and it was a week which saw a lot more than just the first bye week of the season.

NFL Betting Tip

The first two games of the week saw surprise results, with the Chicago Bears defeating the Washington Commanders on the Thursday night and in the second London Game of the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars secured a superb 25-20 win over the Buffalo Bills.

Only two teams remain with a 5-0 record after the weekend, and just one team has still to win a game now that Chicago has ended its losing streak.

As always, we are going to review what has happened in Week 5 in a bit more detail, giving you details of some of the best, and worst, performers of the week.

Then we will give you our look forward to the Week Six action with odds provided by bet365 Sport all of which were correct at the time of writing.

Betting Performance From Last Week – 7/14

  • Winners (Season Total Winners) – 7 (41)
  • Losers (Season Total Losers)7 (22)

Not the best of weeks, but a few shock results involving the Bears and Jaguars, not to mention the Steelers and Raiders meant that I am sure I was not the only one struggling to a 50% week this week.

I am hopeful though that this week’s set of selections which are further down the page, will bring me more success.

Three Notable Performances – Team

  • 49ers Make Light Work Of Cowboys With Utterly Dominant Display

Some people thought the Dallas Cowboys had the best defense in the NFL. They don’t any longer. This was more than a statement win by the best team in the NFL at the present moment. The much vaunted Dallas defense could not cope with a “Mr Irrelevant” WB and a tight end who caught 3 passes, each of which was a touchdown. Then the 49ers defense stepped up to keep the Cowboys to just 10 points. If there is a better, more rounded and more consistent team in the NFL at the moment, then I’m yet to see them.

  • Burrow And Chase Wake Up To Lead Bengals To Win In Arizona

This season has been a hot mess for the Bengals so far as their 1-3 record can testify heading into Arizona this week. Their problems have been laid at the feet of Joe Burrow underperforming. Well the QB ace and his partner in crime Ja’Marr Chase woke up finally this week as Burrow hit Chase for a Bengals record 15 receptions, 3 touchdowns and 192 yards in total. Are the Bengals back? We’ll find out for sure against the Seahawks next week.

  • QB Wilson And Defense Step Up To Hand Jets Key Win Over Broncos

Vilified by much of the New York sports press, including one or two former Jets QBs, Zach Wilson almost led the Jets to success last week. However, this week he achieved just that, combining with a much better showing from the Jets defense to land a morale-boosting win for the Jets. They have not had a great deal of luck this season, and an injury to Sauce Gardner compounds that, but Robert Saleh’s team are fighting hard under those conditions.

Worst Three Performances – Team

  • Patriots Scoreless at Home As Saints Overpower Belichick’s Team

Hands up if you drafted the Saints into your fantasy team last week? That’d be me too. And after they held the hapless Patriots offense to 0 points and racked up 24 fantasy points for me, I’m quite happy at that choice. Bill Belichick won’t be as his QB woes continued as Mac Jones was pulled for the second week in a row with Bailey Zappe taking over once again. Neither look like the answer in New England who are a shadow of the once great teams Belichick has coached in Foxboro.

  • Cowboys Defence Handed Lesson in 49ers Rout

Was it all hype? The Dallas Cowboys defense was lauded by many as one of the best, if not THE best in the NFL. But with Trayvon Diggs out and Micah Parsons a shadow of himself due to an injury last week, the Cowboys could not get near Brock Purdy and the 49ers offense, who racked up 42 points with the defense sacking Dak Prescott four times and recording 3 interceptions. This was a game that the Cowboys will be nursing a few bruised egos after being well beaten.

  • Ravens Stutter As Steelers Defense Leads Pittsburgh To Comeback Win

Lamar Jackson had a decent passing day as QB, some say his best passing performance as a Raven, but even so it was not enough as despite leading 10-0, the Ravens could not deal with the Steelers rock solid defense as Pittsburgh, came back to record a 17-10 win. The Steelers defense scored a safety and forced a key interception and fumble which led to the 10 points late in the game which handed the Steelers a key win against their divisional rivals.

Three Notable Performances – Individual

  • WR Ja’Marr Chase (Bengals) – 15 receptions for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns

Chase and Burrow were back in tandem with the wide receiver setting a new Bengals record for receptions in an NFL game with 15. Three touchdowns and 192 yards was a fantastic haul and suggests the Bengals are finally waking up on offense.

  • WR DJ Moore (Bears) – 8 receptions for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns

Last week Justin Fields had a career day and the Bears still somehow lost to the Broncos. This week is was DJ Moore who had that kind of day, but this time his 3 touchdowns from 8 receptions and 230 yards played a key role in the Bears big win over Washington.

  • RB Zack Moss (Colts) – 23 carries for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns, 2 receptions for 30 yards

The Titans rush defense led the NFL last season, but they were torn apart by the Colts who coped well with the absence of Anthony Richardson after a second quarter injury. Key to their win was RB Zack Moss who gouged the Titans for 165 yards on the ground, 30 more in the air and 2 touchdowns from 23 carries.

Performers of the Week – Week Five

  • Team – Jacksonville Jaguars – beat Bills 25-20 in London game
  • Offensive Player – WR Ja’Marr Chase (Bengals) – 15 rec, 192 yards, 3 TD.
  • Defensive Player – DE Aidan Hutchinson (Lions) – 3 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL, 1 Int
  • Special Teams Player – K Blake Grupe (Saints) – 2 FG, 4 XP
  • Rookie – DT Jalen Carter (Eagles) – 3 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks.
