Poker seat position: action order, the button and heads-up play

Follow a six-seat Hold’em example to distinguish pre-flop and post-flop action, understand relative position and check the two-player exception.

Poker position describes your place in the betting order, not how close your chair is to the person dealing. This guide uses ordinary two-blind Texas Hold’em. A seat can be late before the flop yet still act before another player afterwards.

Which seats act first?

With three or more players, the small blind sits immediately left of the dealer button and the big blind sits next. These are the blind positions described in bet365’s standard poker rules. Before the flop, action starts left of the big blind. On the flop, turn and river, it starts with the first player still in the hand to the button’s left.

The button therefore acts after the other remaining players on each post-flop round. It does not act last before the flop: the blinds still have their turns. A raise can require players who have already acted to respond again.

Why late position matters

The PokerStars position lesson explains the information advantage of acting after opponents. You can observe their actions first; you cannot see their hidden cards or know that a check means weakness. Position is useful information, not a guarantee that a particular hand or bet will win.

The cutoff is the seat immediately before the button. If the cutoff and button both reach the flop, the cutoff is out of position against the button. If only the cutoff and a blind remain, the cutoff acts after that blind. Count the players still involved rather than treating “late position” as a permanent label.

A six-seat exercise without stakes

Put six labels in a clockwise circle: A = button, B = small blind, C = big blind, D = under the gun, E = hijack, F = cutoff. For this exercise, everybody is dealt in, nobody is all-in and there are no extra blinds or straddles.

Before the flop, the first pass is D → E → F → A → B → C. On a post-flop round with all six still involved, it is B → C → D → E → F → A. These are orders of turns, not instructions to bet; further action depends on what happens.

Now remove A, D and E after hypothetical folds. With B, C and F left, the post-flop order becomes B → C → F. F acts last. Restore A and remove B instead: among A, C and F, the order is C → F → A. F’s relationship to the button has changed the answer. Repeat on paper before adding any cards.

What changes heads-up?

With just two players, the button posts the small blind. It acts first before the flop and last afterwards; the other player posts the big blind. PokerStars’ rules reference states this exception explicitly. Do not carry the six-seat pre-flop sequence into a heads-up hand.

Can changing chairs change your position?

A different physical seat can change which opponents are on either side of you. That is different from changing your luck. The button determines each hand’s positions; changing chairs does not make favourable cards due. Check the room’s seat-change and blind rules rather than assuming you can avoid a compulsory blind.

At bet365, the published standard rules include posting requirements for joining or returning to a cash table and restrictions on sitting out to avoid the blind rotation. This article is not permission to bypass those rules.

BCP’s cash-game and tournament comparison explains the different chip and entry structures. For a different game, read the Omaha rules guide; do not assume a Hold’em example settles every poker variant.
