Las Vegas – An eerie silence has crept through the poker world this week – it’s May, which normally means social media threads dedicated to selling tournament action (and about the ethical debate behind how much markup a pro should reasonably charge) – and yet for the first time in years we’ve seen no such thing.
So, what gives? For health and safety reasons, the World Series of Poker – which normally starts at the tail of May – won’t begin until September 30, 2021 this year. That means the world’s top poker talent has the summer off.
The BonusCodePoker.com team decided to reach out to some players who would normally be mainstays at the Rio between late May and mid-July to ask an important question.
Mike Matusow: What the f*ck do you mean “without the WSOP running”? That’s a bunch of horsesh*t, just lies propagated by Caesars execs who don’t know sh*t about poker. I’m going to spend my summer at the Rio winning bracelets because I’m at the top of my f*cking game. This is my year, man. I used to be the greatest, and I’m going to be the greatest again. Three bracelets by mid-June, mark my words. THREE.
Doug Polk: I’m thinking about retiring, honestly. Maybe twice? I’ll also probably spend a few hours a day spam refreshing Daniel Negreanu’s Twitter feed.
Dan Bilzerian: [Comments redacted by our editorial team for violations of common decency]
Huck Seed: Okay so hear me out. I’m looking for people to take the other side of a prop bet where I camp out in front of the Rio all summer long, waiting for the new WSOP start time. $5 million says I can do it without anything but access to the Rio bathroom, a tent, and a slingshot. Any takers?
Stoyan Madanzhiev: I’m going to prepare to defend win my WSOP Main Event title.
Mike Postle: I don’t need a vacation from being the greatest player in the history of the universe, but this summer I’m going to spend most of my time brib… er… befriending… the WSOP camera crew.
Bryn Kenny: I’m going to hire a PR firm to coordinate a public appearance schedule so that by the WSOP this fall, I’ll be recognizable as a poker player by at least a few people there.
Daniel Negreanu: I’m going to make sure I keep everyone’s attention on social media anyway by parking in a handicap spot I’m painting behind my house, pretending to threaten people watching my streams, and doing some interviews about increasing rake. Bad press is better than no press, so they say.
Phil Ivey: Idk, probably just keep being cool af.
Stay cool, friends. And remember: you don’t HAVE to wait until September to start selling action.
