American vs European roulette: rules, payouts and zero checks
Compare European and American roulette wheels, learn conventional bet payouts and check zero settlement, with independent probability and return examples.
European roulette normally means a single-zero wheel: numbers 1–36 and 0, making 37 pockets. The conventional American wheel adds 00 for 38. That changes the probabilities, but the wheel name alone does not tell you the payout, zero settlement or rules of a particular online variant.
Check the wheel and paytable together
The Star’s official roulette guide shows single-, double- and triple-zero layouts and conventional payouts. It is an Australian game guide, not confirmation of bet365’s UK catalogue. Count the actual pockets and read the displayed rules rather than guessing from the table’s decoration or language.
How a roulette round works
An ordinary round accepts bets before betting closes, then the result identifies the winning pocket and the dealer or software settles the selected positions. Check that a chip marks the number or boundary you intended. The table can have separate limits for different positions; several chips also mean several stakes, not one combined chance with a single cost.

These conventional payouts are reference values, not a current bet365 table quotation. Special multiplier or jackpot games may differ. Zero is not red or black, and it does not belong to the ordinary odd/even, low/high, column or dozen groups.
Why 2.70% is different from 2.63%
Here is an independent paper calculation, not a real bet. Assume 37 equally likely pockets, a one-unit straight-up stake, 35 units of profit on a win and loss of the stake otherwise. Expected net result: (1 × 35 − 36 × 1) ÷ 37 = −1/37, about −2.70% per unit staked. The old 2.63% single-zero claim was incorrect under these assumptions.
With 38 equally likely pockets and the same payout, (35 − 37) ÷ 38 = −2/38, about −5.26%. With 39, it becomes −3/39, about −7.69%. These models do not promise how much a session will lose. A different payout or special settlement needs a new calculation; not every bet on every wheel has the same edge.
What happens when zero wins?
Read the rule for the exact wager. In the single-zero model above, an ordinary red bet loses on zero. A concession can change that settlement. For example, bet365’s Greece-hosted Live Roulette rules describe La Partage returning half of an eligible even-money stake on zero at the specified French table. That document is not proof that your UK game offers it.
Do not treat “en prison” as a name for every spin of zero, or assume every European wheel includes a French zero concession. Look for an explicit rule explaining whether a stake loses, partly returns or remains subject to another result, and which bets qualify.
Profit, total return and repeated stakes
In a fictional two-unit straight-up win at 35:1, profit is 70 units and total return is 72 including the winning stake. If several other two-unit positions lose in that round, subtract them when calculating the round’s net result. A displayed winning payout is not necessarily a profit for all your bets combined.
