Arsenal v Leeds preview: throws, crosses and the far-post threat

Arsenal return from their Brighton defeat to face unbeaten Leeds. Ampadu’s long throws and Bogle’s far-post runs give Arteta’s side specific problems to solve at the Emirates on 10 October.

Arsenal return from the international break with a 3–0 defeat at Brighton to put right. Leeds will give them something more specific to deal with than the need for a response: long throws into a crowded box, crosses towards Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jayden Bogle arriving beyond the far post.

The teams meet at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday 10 October 2026, kicking off at 12.30pm BST on TNT Sports. The Premier League's television schedule confirms the time; our Premier League fixtures guide covers the rest of the round.

Brighton exposed more than Arsenal's finishing

Four league wins were followed by a poor afternoon at the Amex on 19 September. Arsenal's own match report records nine Brighton possession wins in the final third. Early misplaced clearances and turnovers left David Raya having to deal with shots before Arsenal had established much of an attack.

The goals were not all alike. Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas scored from distance; Chema Andres headed in a corner at the far post. At the other end, Kai Havertz's one-on-one was saved by Bart Verbruggen.

That leaves Arteta with work at both ends. Getting out of their own half cleanly would let Arsenal attack with more players facing forwards. But even if they manage that, they still need to defend deliveries into the box. Brighton's third goal is the part Leeds should find especially interesting.

A goalless draw with several routes to goal

Leeds went into the break unbeaten after five league games, but their 0–0 with Crystal Palace on 20 September was not an afternoon without chances. The club's report describes Ethan Ampadu's long throws reaching James Justin for a blocked effort and, via a flick, Ao Tanaka for a half-volley over the bar.

Bogle was a target for Gabriel Gudmundsson's looping far-post delivery, although his first-time effort was blocked. Later, Justin crossed for Calvert-Lewin, whose shot was saved. Palace also threatened, including a Yeremy Pino free-kick that James Trafford kept out.

The variety matters. A defence following Calvert-Lewin in the middle can lose a runner behind it; a defender who wins the first contact from a throw has not finished the job if the loose ball drops to Tanaka. Leeds failed to turn those situations into goals against Palace. Arsenal still have to account for them.

The far-post runner deserves a second look

Bogle's arrival is the most intriguing detail here. With a delivery coming from the opposite flank, the nearest Arsenal defender would have to watch the ball while keeping track of a player approaching from outside his immediate view. Staying close to the centre-forward alone would not cover that danger.

There is a cost for Leeds too. Sending a wide player into the box leaves space to defend if Arsenal clear the ball and move it quickly. Leeds need enough support behind the attack to stop one missed cross becoming an Arsenal break. How far Bogle can advance may therefore depend on how often Leeds can keep Arsenal pinned back.

Team news affects the midfield contest

Declan Rice's availability needs particular attention. Sky Sports reported his England withdrawal on 21 September; that announcement does not establish whether he can face Leeds. His involvement would affect Arteta's midfield options as Arsenal try to escape pressure and collect clearances around their own penalty area.

Ampadu has been in action during the break: Leeds confirmed he played the full match in Wales' win over Norway in a report dated 2 October. Bukayo Saka, meanwhile, scored twice in England's 7–0 win in Croatia on 3 October. The final club team news is still to come. This preview was checked on 4 October.

What would an Arsenal response look like?

For Leeds, the challenge is to make those attacks count away from Elland Road. For Arsenal, territory alone will not settle the game: they could have most of the ball and still find themselves defending a dangerous throw or cross. The first few Leeds deliveries should tell us something about whether Arsenal are tracking the far-post run and reacting to clearances more sharply than they did at Brighton.
