Aston Villa v Fulham: Wide Deliveries, Saved Chances and Defending the Box

An early look at Villa v Fulham on 31 October: wide deliveries, goalkeeping and the October evidence behind a both-teams-to-score angle priced by Bet365.

Fulham’s deliveries into the box and Villa’s ability to turn a loose ball into a chance make this more interesting than a glance at the fixture list. The question at Villa Park is whether either defence can stop its goalkeeper having quite so much to do.

Fulham can find the runner; finishing is another matter

Manchester United’s report of the 1–1 draw at Craven Cottage on 20 September describes Josh King meeting an Alex Iwobi cross on the bounce and forcing Senne Lammens to parry. King also threatened on a quick break, while Lammens came out to block Iwobi. Fulham had more than one way of getting someone in front of goal.

That gives Villa a specific defensive problem. Closing down the delivery matters, but so does following the runner who arrives to meet it. A goalkeeper’s save can rescue the first mistake; it doesn’t make the marking sound. Equally, those Fulham chances did not become a string of goals. The finish still has to survive its appointment with the goalkeeper.

Villa’s goals came by different routes

Tottenham’s report of Villa’s 3–2 win on 19 September starts with Zion Suzuki keeping Spurs out, including a double save from Savio. At the other end, Johan Manzambi turned in Boubacar Kamara’s shot. Later, Suzuki’s long goal-kick reached Manzambi, whose touch helped Nicolas Jackson score; Emi Buendía then struck from outside the box.

For Fulham, the lesson is about the next contact. A shot redirected close to goal asks a different question from a long ball worked through a forward, or a strike from range. Defenders drawn towards the first ball can leave someone else room. Villa also conceded twice late on, so that afternoon offers no certificate of defensive competence.

October has added a warning for each side

Villa drew 2–2 at home to Brentford on 10 October, with Kristoffer Ajer’s late equaliser denying them victory. Fulham lost 2–1 at Ipswich the same day: Ryan Sessegnon scored after 55 minutes, before Abdoul Ouattara equalised in the 88th and Dara O’Shea headed in Jack Clarke’s set-piece delivery in stoppage time.

O’Shea’s close-range header makes defending the delivery a concern for Fulham too. Creating trouble at one end does not exempt a side from tracking a runner at the other. A side protecting a lead still has to defend the full width of its box.

Villa then beat Fenerbahçe 6–0 in the Champions League at Villa Park on 14 October. That is a substantial attacking result against different opposition; it cannot settle how Fulham will defend. Villa’s Viking game on 21 October and the league meetings on 17 and 24 October still lie ahead of this preview’s check date.

Team news and the line-up questions

Fulham’s 16 October press conference put Antonee Robinson in line to return to the squad against Hull, while Hugo Larsson was a doubt with a groin problem. Álvaro Arbeloa said the other players were available for that game. That update concerns Hull on 17 October, not a fitness clearance for Villa a fortnight later.

UEFA’s team record for Villa against Fenerbahçe includes Matty Cash, Pau Torres and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the starting defence, with Ross Barkley and Ibrahim Mbaye also starting. Those are recent selection facts, not a predicted Villa XI for 31 October. For Fulham, the Ipswich substitution record confirms that Iwobi, King and Gonzalo García all played before coming off.

The attacking comparison depends on who actually starts. Iwobi supplying King and Manzambi linking with Jackson are specific combinations from the reports; changing those players changes the argument. Neither starting XI for this fixture is confirmed in this early preview.

Bet365 betting angle

Both teams to score, yes, over 90 minutes plus stoppage time is the question this match-up raises for a later price check. Fulham have produced chances from wide service, while Villa have scored through close-range combinations and from distance. The recent league games also give both defences something to answer for.

The objection is sitting right there in the match reports: chances can end in saves. Suzuki and Lammens demonstrated that, and a handful of games against different opponents is a thin basis for predicting this one. Bet365 had both teams to score, yes, at 8/13 when we checked on 19 October 2026 at 9.48pm BST. That short price is an angle to weigh, not a betting recommendation, so no grand proclamation from the armchair.

The starting teams and a fresh price check are still needed before taking the idea further, as odds move. You can view bet365 Sports for the Sports welcome offer, and use our optional bonus code BET247 if you sign up.
