Over the past week, we have had the first two matchdays of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign and there has been plenty to think about across both sets of games.

In this review, we are going to recap all the results and the current table standings for each of the 10 Groups, before we take a look at ten special things to note about these opening two games.

Within that, we also may mention a couple of bets that may well appeal to punters based on what has happened (all markets and odds from bet365 Sport).

Let’s now bring you up to speed with all the results and scorers, plus the current Euro 2024 Qualifier Tables from the past week of action.

Ten Key Things To Note From The Euro 2024 Qualifiers This Week

  • 1. Age Is No Barrier To Quality Anymore – Sweden called up 41-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic for their qualifiers. Portugal called upon 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, while Croatia ace Luka Modric is still pulling the strings in midfield at 37. The modern international superstar is capable of playing much longer at the higher level, or so it seems.
  • 2. Steve Clarke’s Scotland Are On The Way Back – While the home win over Cyprus was expected, the 2-0 home win over Spain was a huge surprise, but fully deserved. Scott McTominay’s four goals have given the Scots a massive boost at the start of this campaign and they look a genuine contender to top Group A now. They are still 5/1 to top the group with bet365 but those odds do look tempting.
  • 3. England’s Win In Italy Is Very Important – Make no mistake, England’s win in Italy was a huge mental hurdle cleared by England. They had not beaten Italy in a top level competition since 1977. The Three Lions always seem to fall short against the very top teams in the world, so going to Italy and winning is a massive morale boost for Southgate’s team and saw their odds come right in to 5/1 joint-favourites to win the tournament with France.
  • 4. France Still Look The Team To Beat – Germany as hosts will be amongst the favourites in the summer of 2024, as will England but France still look the team to beat especially after their 4-0 thrashing of the Netherlands. They weren’t so impressive against Ireland in Dublin, but still emerged with a 1-0 win and that is the sign of a very good team indeed.
  • 5. Wales Qualification Hopes Are Brighter – The draw in Croatia was a huge boost for Wales as this was their toughest game in the group by far. If they can get similar results or better away to Armenia and particularly Turkey, then the Welsh could well be on to qualify for the 2024 Finals if their home form remains strong.
  • 6. Switzerland & Portugal Will Progress Very Easily – The Swiss and Portuguese have been drawn in very weak groups compared to some of the others and I think it is likely that both these teams could qualify for the finals with 100% perfect records, or at least very close to that.
  • 7. Group H Looks Like The Group Which Could Be The Most Open – If we exclude San Marino from the list, the other 5 teams in Group H will all feel that they stand a chance of qualifying for next summer’s tournament. With Denmark losing in Kazakhstan, this has really opened up this group for any of the five teams bar San Marino to make their mark.
  • 8. Group E Looks Like The Weakest Group – With a stuttering Czechia and Poland at the top of the group, Moldova unbeaten after two games and two draws and the Faroe Islands on a point after one game, it is fair to say that Group E looks like the weakest of all the qualifying groups this time around.
  • 9. The Emerging Central Europe – A number of teams from Central Europe and the Balkans regions seem to be emerging. Hungary and Austria are two of the teams that have caught the eye of late, but teams like Slovenia, Serbia, Slovakia and North Macedonia are emerging as potential qualifiers in their groups.
  • 10. There Will Be Twists And Turns Over The Next Eight Matchdays – We’ve already seen a few surprise results on Matchdays 1 and 2 and it is fair to assume that qualification won’t be as smooth for some teams as others as I think the capacity for some surprise results exists in almost every one of the different groups.
