On Thanksgiving Day, so many people are tuned into the NFL. It’s a longstanding Thanksgiving tradition in the United States that it’s a day for turkey and football. And that tradition has spread well beyond the USA’s borders too. It must feel awesome to be an NFL player on Thanksgiving, with so many eyes watching your next triumph. But what if your Thanksgiving game isn’t a triumph at all… These hilarious NFL moments just go to show that messing up on a holiday can live on in infamy…
Snow slide
Picture this. It’s Thanksgiving Day in Dallas, Texas in 1993. The field is covered in snow. The Miami Dolphins are facing off against the Dallas Cowboys. At the end of the game, Miami’s Pete Stoyanovich lines up to kick the ball to win the game with a 41-yard field goal. But the Cowboys intervene, blocking the kick.
The two teams swarm around the ball. With a score of 14-13, in order for the Cowboys to win, they just have to not touch the ball. Things aren’t looking so hot for the Dolphins though. And it looks like this is a done deal for the Cowboys.
Until Leon Lett slides onto the scene. He trips on the snow, falls onto the ball and now it’s live once again. With three seconds to go, Stoyanovich kicked the ball from the one-yard line, scored and won the game for the Dolphins. A hilarious NFL snow slide that no one will ever forget.
Coin confusion
In 1998, the Pittsburgh Steelers vs Detroit Lions game goes into overtime. Running back Jerome Bettis called it for the Steelers. And it looked like he won the toss by calling tails. But the official insisted he had called heads and the Lions started the overtime play.
Despite the Steelers having a 7-4 start, the Lions went on to win the game 19-16. And they didn’t win another game for the entire 1998 season. Was the coin toss entirely to blame? Probably not. But it didn’t help steel the confidence of the Steelers.
Okay, it might not be the most hilarious NFL moment to happen on Thanksgiving. But the humor in a coin toss causing that much disruption definitely is a bit of a darkly comedic moment.
Butt fumble
With a name like that, you know this is bound to be a truly hilarious NFL moment. This time the New England Patriots are taking on the New York Jets in the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The year is 2012 and we’re in the second quarter of the game.New York Jets’ Mark Sanchez is running with the ball during a busted play. But he’s clearly not looking where he’s going and he ends up face planting right into the rear end of his teammate Brandon Moore. And from that moment on, Sanchez became known as the Butt Fumble guy. Extremely embarrassing.
And it’s not like the Jets got to hold on to much face after that moment. They lost the game in a devastating 14-49 take down. Definitely a Turkey Day that Sanchez and the Jets would rather forget. But if you like embarrassing NFL moments, then you’ll want to remember it!
