Brighton lead the division for goals after seven matches: 23 scored, five conceded and 16 points. They sit third, four points above fifth-placed Liverpool. Their 5–0 win over Crystal Palace followed league victories over Arsenal and Sunderland, so the attacking case extends beyond one derby afternoon.
The Palace goals also showed several ways to get through a defence. Pascal Gross’s delivery forced the opening own goal, Diego Gomez scored from near halfway and Yasin Ayari finished a move across the box. After the break, Babis Kostoulas reacted to a blocked shot; Jack Hinshelwood later followed up a saved header.
For Liverpool, the useful warning is the movement around the first attempt. Brighton had players ready when blocks and saves left the ball loose. Defenders who stop the initial shot still need to track the next runner. Gomez’s long-range goal was exceptional; the supporting runs are the more relevant test at Anfield.
Liverpool’s 4–3 win on Tuesday showed how much damage they can do once their attack gets going. It also exposed space for opponents: Villarreal went 2–0 ahead through Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona before Liverpool recovered.
Alexis Mac Allister scored twice, with Ronald Araujo and Florian Wirtz also on target. Rio Ngumoha supplied Araujo’s back-post header and created Mac Allister’s second with a run down the right. That combination of a wide attacker beating his man and a midfielder arriving in the box gives Brighton a specific problem to solve.
Brighton will need cover behind the player who goes out to meet the winger. Leave that defender isolated and Liverpool can reach the byline; pull the midfield across too far and Mac Allister can find room inside. Villarreal’s late third goal, after Liverpool had led 4–2, is the warning against treating the comeback as a defensive recovery too.
Brighton’s league record supports the goals argument more strongly than Liverpool’s. Liverpool have scored nine in seven league games, and only two across their three Anfield matches: 2–2 against Nottingham Forest, 0–0 against Fulham and 0–3 against Manchester City.
Liverpool did win 2–1 at Brentford on Saturday before beating Villarreal. Their attack has produced consecutive wins, but Sunday’s opponent has kept four consecutive league clean sheets. We should give that defensive run as much attention as Brighton’s 23 goals. Liverpool scoring is the less secure half of a both-teams-to-score argument.
Liverpool managed Alexander Isak’s minutes against Villarreal because he was returning from a muscle injury. Andoni Iraola also rested Wirtz and Bradley Barcola from the starting XI after a demanding run of games. All three came on; Araujo’s half-time withdrawal was tactical, with Iraola confirming he was OK.
Brighton still have Thursday’s away match at FK Jablonec in the UEFA Conference League before Sunday’s trip to Anfield. Rotation is a reasonable expectation across that schedule, though the names and extent remain open. Liverpool have two extra days between their European match and this fixture; Thursday’s workload will show how much that matters for Brighton.
The match is on Sunday afternoon, with Brighton’s European trip still to come. These are the main timing and selection points for the Anfield meeting.
Liverpool v Brighton starts at 14:00 GMT on Sunday 25 October 2026 at Anfield. Sky Sports has live coverage in the United Kingdom. The fixture details were checked on 21 October; the start time uses GMT after the clocks change.
As of 21 October, Brighton’s away game at FK Jablonec is still ahead, on Thursday 22 October. That leaves a shorter turnaround than Liverpool’s Tuesday-to-Sunday schedule. Brighton’s selection and minutes in that match will help assess Sunday’s likely rotation.
Both teams to score is the market we’d examine first. Brighton’s varied routes to goal can test a Liverpool defence that conceded three on Tuesday, while Liverpool’s wide combinations and midfield arrivals give them a way to respond. We aren’t making a priced recommendation while the United Kingdom odds remain unverified.
The strongest objection is Brighton’s four straight league clean sheets, alongside Liverpool’s limited home league scoring. Thursday’s selection could change the balance again: substantial changes to Brighton’s midfield or attack would weaken the case built on the Palace performance. The evidence is stronger for Brighton to score than for Brighton to win.
