We had plenty of drama on Week Eight of the NFL season, with last gasp wins in overtime, some bonehead plays and calls, some outstanding action in the very last seconds of regular time, and some surprise results as teams with very good records came unstuck against an opponent that is starting to show they are genuine contenders this year too.

So what were the big stories of Week 8 of the season? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

NFL Matchday 8 – Main Stories

Buccaneers Woes Continues In Ravens Defeat – Tampa Bay’s woes continued this week as Tom Brady couldn’t steer his team to a win over the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. With just 44 yards rushing, the one-dimensional Bucs could not hold on as Lamar Jackson led a second half fightback to claim a crucial 27-22 victory. Former Buccaneer Warren Sapp called out the effort of defensive captain Devin White after the game (above).

Cowboys Land Big Win Over Bears – The NFC East is hotting up with the Eagles remaining the only team with a 100% record after eight weeks of the season but the Giants and Cowboys are now in hot pursuit with the latter putting in a fantastic all-round performance in their big victory over the Chicago Bears. When the Cowboys play like this, they look an incredibly strong outfit.

Commanders Steal Last Gasp Win Over Hapless Colts – Terry McLaurin came back to haunt his childhood favourites as the Commanders star wide receiver landed a key catch late in the game to set up a fine comeback win for the Commanders against the Colts. The last gasp win not only handed the Colts a crushing defeat in the week after they moved on from Matt Ryan, but also keeps the Commanders in contention in a very tough NFC East.

Seahawks Shine In Win Over Giants – Seattle were supposed to be the weakest link in the NFC West, but they are very much looking like the best option for the playoffs as their opponents struggle in the division. Geno Smith was efficient once again and Tyler Lockett made up for a dropped pass to steer the Seahawks to an impressive win over the previously 6-1 New York Giants.

49ers Remain A Nemesis For The Rams – The Los Angeles Rams record against the San Francisco 49ers, in the regular season at least, remains awful as Matt Stafford and the Rams offense continued to struggle. Even with Deebo Samuel out, the 49ers offense, led by Jimmy Garoppolo and Christian McCaffrey scored 31 points, with McCaffrey passing, rushing and catching a touchdown in only his second game as a 49er.

Bills Pile On Woes For Packers – A sterling defensive effort from the Bills ensured that they remained very much at the top of the AFC East after a big win against the Green Bay Packers. Josh Allen had a quiet game on offense but Stefon Diggs landed 108 yards receiving plus a touchdown to ice the win but it was a fantastic effort from the Bills defense that was the catalyst for this win.

NFL Star Performers of the Week – Offense/ST

  • WR A.J.Brown (Eagles) – 6 receptions for 156 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • QB Jalen Hurts (Eagles) – 19/28 for 285 yards and 4 touchdowns
  • QB Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins) – 29/36 for 382 yards and 3 touchdowns, 19 yards rushing.
  • WR Tyreek Hill (Dolphins) – 12 receptions for 188 yards
  • WT Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins) – 8 receptions for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • RB D’Onta Foreman (Falcons) – 26 carries for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns
  • WR DeAndre Hopkins (Cardinals) – 12 receptions for 159 yards and a touchdown
  • RB Tony Pollard (Cowboys) – 14 carries for 131 yards and 3 touchdowns
  • RB Alvin Kamara (Saints) – 18 carries, 62 yards, 1 TD, 9 receptions, 96 yards, 2 TDs
  • RB Derrick Henry (Titans) – 32 carries, 219 yards, 2 TD, 1 reception for 9 yards.
  • RB Christian McCaffrey (49ers) – 18 carries for 91 yards TD, 1 pass for 34 yards & TD, 8 receptions for 55 yards and 1 TD
  • QB Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers) – 21/25 235 yards for 2 touchdowns
  • RB Nick Chubb (Browns) – 23 carries for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns
  • WR Amari Cooper (Browns) – 5 receptions for 131 yards and 1 touchdown.
  • RB Travis Etienne (Jaguars) – 24 carries, 156 yards & TD, 3 receptions for 6 yards

NFL Star Performers Of The Week – Defense

  • Cleveland Browns – The Bengals may have missed Ja’Marr Chase, but the Browns defensive effort was outstanding. Led by Myles Garrett, they sacked Joe Burrow five times and intercepted him once to lay the foundation for an absolutely vital 32-13 win over their divisional rivals.
  • Buffalo Bills – The Bills offense has taken most of the plaudits this season but be absolutely aware that the Bills defense is a formidable unit too. They sacked Aaron Rodgers twice, intercepted him once and nullified a Green Bay offense superbly well which paved the way for the Bills to earn their sixth win from seven this season.
  • San Francisco 49ers – After some poor performances, the 49ers defense showed up big time against the Rams with Fred Warner and Joey Bosa the most notable contributors alongside the dominating Talanoa Hufanga. The 49ers played like an elite defensive unit which led to the relative ease of their victory.
  • New Orleans Saints – Any team that holds an opponent to zero points in a game has had their defense play lights out and that is what this excellent Saints unit did against the hapless Raiders.  Four sacks and one interception don’t tell the story of how effective this unit was in all phases against a talented Raiders offense.

NFL Rookies Of The Week

  • C Tyler Linderbaum (Ravens) – 79.0 PFF run-blocking grade in win over Bucs.
  • TE Greg Dulcich (Broncos) – 4 receptions, 87 receiving yards.
  • LB Malcolm Rodriguez (Lions) – Fumble Recovery and Sack in loss to Dolphins
  • TE Isaiah Likely (Ravens) – 6 receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown
  • WR Garrett Wilson (Jets) – 6 receptions for 115 yards.

NFL Key Injuries

  • S Jordan Poyer (Bills) – Poyer picked up an elbow injury in the 4th quarter.
  • WR Cooper Kupp (Rams) – Picked up an ankle injury but fortunately it does not look serious.
  • DT Jordan Davis (Eagles) – Is to have an MRI on a high ankle sprain, status is as yet unknown.
  • RB Mark Ingram (Saints) – Sustained a knee injury and is questionable this week with a suggestion he could miss 3-4 weeks.
  • WR Devante Parker (Patriots) – A knee injury forced him out against the Jets and he’s day to day.
  • G Liam Eichenberg (Dolphins) – Sustained a knee injury and is questionable for this week.
  • RB Jonathan Taylor (Colts) – Sustained ankle injury but should be fit to go this week.

NFL Bonehead Play of The Week

It’s an easy one this week as all of the NFL was dumbfounded at what transpired in the Carolina Panthers @ Atlanta Falcons game. Trailing by six with time running out, Panthers quarterback PJ Walker hoised a Hail Mary into the Falcons end zone where D.J.Moore made an outstanding catch to hand the Panthers an unlikely tie, with just an extra point kick required to claim an incredible win.

However, Moore decided to celebrate by jumping into the stands to celebrate with Panthers fans and beforehand, made the stupid decision to remove his helmet.

That decision cost the Panthers a 15-yard penalty which would be tacked on to the extra point attempt, meaning that the Panthers kicker Eddy Pineiro had a very tricky 48-yard kick to win the game, instead of a 33-yard chip shot.

Pineiro missed and the game went to Overtime, where Pineiro, with his confidence shot, missed again allowing Younghoe Koo to kick the winning field goal from 41 yards.

To be fair, in a week when there were several notable contenders for this particular award, it took something pretty spectacular in order to win it and D.J.Moore provided it.

NFL Matchday 9 – Top Betting Tips With Bet365

We landed one decent win last week thanks to the Falcons, but I would have liked to see another win or two. We fell one touchdown short in the Bills game from landing another good win but my other tips were a bit wide of the mark. Let’s hope this week’s set is better.

  • Jalen Hurts – Over 238.5 passing yards for Eagles v Texans – 10/11
  • Detroit Lions to beat Green Bay Packers by 1-6 points – 15/4
  • Raiders @ Jaguars – Under 47 points – 21/20
  • Seahawks to beat the Cardinals by 7-12 points – 6/1
  • Titans to beat the Chiefs – Moneyline – 19/4
