Poker GTO explained: equilibrium, solver assumptions and study limits

Separate GTO theory from profit promises, check the assumptions behind solver output and work through a fictional mixed-frequency calculation away from live play.

GTO stands for game theory optimal. In poker discussions it refers to an equilibrium strategy for a defined game, not a promise that studying a chart will produce a profit. A useful first question is: which game and assumptions does this answer describe?

What “unexploitable” actually refers to

At a Nash equilibrium, a player cannot improve their expected result by changing strategy alone while the others keep theirs unchanged. GTO Wizard’s explanation uses this as the basis of GTO and distinguishes a fixed strategy from one that adjusts to an opponent.

Fixed does not mean taking the same action with every hand. A strategy can respond differently to different cards, positions and bet sizes. It can also mix actions in the same situation. Those decisions form a strategy together; copying one displayed frequency is not the same as implementing the whole solution.

An exploitative adjustment responds to a presumed opponent mistake rather than following the unchanged reference strategy. If that read is wrong, or the opponent adjusts, the decision can fail. The equilibrium concept does not require every opponent you meet to play perfectly, and “unexploitable” is not a certificate of your own play.

A solver answers the model you give it

GTO Wizard’s solver explanation describes repeated expected-value calculations within a specified betting tree. Inputs include pot and stack sizes, permitted bets, ranges and board cards; the model can also account for rake or tournament-payout effects. Reducing the available actions makes the problem smaller but changes what the software can examine.

A chart from one stack depth or bet-size tree does not automatically answer another. Nor should a two-player result stand in for a multiway pot. Before comparing outputs, check the same game, number of players, positions, effective stacks, pot, ranges, betting options and cost assumptions. A missing input is a reason to withhold a conclusion, not fill the gap with a confident guess.

Read a mixed frequency without turning it into a rule

Here is an original arithmetic exercise, not a solved poker hand. Suppose a fictional study display assigns “bet” 60% and “check” 40% at one decision. Across 100 equally weighted cases, those labels correspond to 60 and 40 cases. They do not promise exactly six bets in each group of ten, or tell you which real hand to bet.

Now suppose the same invented display reports an expected net result of two units for betting and one unit for checking against a fixed hypothetical response. Its mixed expected result is 0.6 × 2 + 0.4 × 1 = 1.6 units. That calculation only averages the supplied values. It does not establish an equilibrium; a changed response or different assumptions can change those values. None is a live price, winning probability or recommendation to stake money.

Study away from an ongoing game

A saved hand can support a useful review if you record what actually happened and which details you do not know. Compare the reasoning only after matching the assumptions; a different answer may reflect a different model rather than a mistake you have proved.

For bet365, the UK standard poker rules prohibit software that automates play or supplies real-time information or facilities to assist an ongoing game. Do not consult a solver for a live decision or use this article as permission to run assistance. Check the applicable room’s rules before using any study tool.

Why the theory is not an income plan

A modelled expected result is not the result of the next hand or session. Rake, different games, incomplete knowledge and imperfect implementation matter; a label on a chart does not remove gambling losses. This guide makes no claim about a reader’s win rate, a particular software subscription or the standard of opponents at bet365.

BCP’s position guide provides a paper exercise for action order. The pot-odds guide covers a separate calculation. Understand those distinctions before treating “optimal” as an answer to every poker question.
