Sandown’s April 2026 weekend: Flat racing and the Jump Finale

An archive of Sandown’s 24–25 April 2026 meeting, explaining the Flat programme and Jump Finale. The race-specific promotion in the original preview has expired.

Archive: Sandown, 24–25 April 2026. This was a two-day meeting, with Flat racing on Friday followed by the Jump Finale on Saturday. The race-specific promotion described in the original preview has expired; this article is a guide to the meeting, not an invitation to claim it.

Friday: the Flat programme

The original preview looked at the Classic Trial, Gordon Richards Stakes and bet365 Mile, alongside the Esher Cup. These races posed different questions: how three-year-olds might develop over longer trips, how established middle-distance horses compared, and how the milers were starting their campaigns.

Calling a race a trial does not make its result a forecast of the Derby. A trial can reveal how a horse handles a trip, pace or course without settling how it will perform in a later race against a different field. The distinction matters when reading a spring preview after the season has moved on.

Saturday: the end of the jumps season

bet365’s guide, updated on 27 April 2026, records an eight-race Jump Finale at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey, on Saturday 25 April. It lists the Gold Cup as a 3-mile-4-furlong contest, with the Celebration Chase, Oaksey Chase and Select Hurdle among the supporting races.

The Gold Cup and Celebration Chase were separate tests. The staying handicap required horses to cover a much longer distance, while the Celebration Chase was a two-mile race. The extra distance changed the demands of the race; the two contests cannot be compared simply by looking at the order in which horses finished.

Why the two days belonged together

Friday’s Flat card and Saturday’s jumps card gave the weekend its contrast. Reading them as one undifferentiated meeting would miss the change in discipline: the questions posed by a Flat trial were not the questions posed by a staying chase at the end of the jumps season.

That is also why a result from one day should not stand in for analysis of the other. The dates here refer to the April 2026 meeting. A racecard for another date or the next annual Jump Finale describes a different event.

The April promotion is no longer available

The original article included a race-specific stake-back promotion for Friday. The qualifying race is over, so the offer cannot be claimed from this archive. A current promotion shown elsewhere on this page is not a continuation of that offer, and its terms must be read independently.

For other racing topics, see BCP’s Tote betting guide and explanation of overround. Neither an old race preview nor knowledge of a course guarantees a winning bet.
