Sunderland’s supply to Brian Brobbey and Brighton’s pressing shape the 10 October meeting. We examine the chances behind their September results and what Brobbey’s unresolved fitness means for the match-up.

Brian Brobbey's fitness matters to Sunderland against Brighton because he finished several different kinds of chance at Manchester City. Replacing his goals, if he cannot play, would mean finding someone to meet that supply. Sunderland also have to deliver it without giving Brighton chances to attack a loose pass.
This early preview, checked on 5 October, examines that balance. Brobbey's international injury withdrawal is confirmed; his availability for Brighton is not.
Sunderland host Brighton at the Stadium of Light on Saturday 10 October 2026, with kick-off at 3pm UK time (BST). The Premier League schedule and Brighton's away-fixture information agree on the timing. Our Premier League fixtures hub covers the rest of the round.
Sunderland lost 5-3 at the Etihad on 20 September despite Brobbey's hat-trick. City's report records an Enzo Le Fée pass through the defence for his first, a Thomas Meunier cross for his second and Nilson Angulo's header back into his path for the third.
Those goals asked different questions of the defence: track a run behind, defend a delivery from wide, then react to a second ball near goal. Brighton cannot answer all of them simply by crowding the centre-forward. Pressure on the passer and awareness of the next receiver matter too.
There was a warning in Sunderland's build-up as well. City's press forced a turnover before Rayan Cherki scored. Against opponents who can win the ball high, reaching the attacking players safely is part of the problem.
The Netherlands' 25 September announcement says Joshua Zirkzee replaced Brobbey after the Sunderland striker went off injured in the first half against Germany. It gives no recovery date or decision on the Brighton match.
If Brobbey is fit to start, Sunderland have the option of keeping a familiar target for those deliveries. If he is unavailable, the question becomes who stretches the defence and who arrives in the box. Naming a replacement now would pretend the selection is settled.
A forward dropping towards midfield might help Sunderland play through pressure, but someone else would then need to run beyond him. Equally, leaving a striker high only helps if the midfield can find him. These are choices for the match, not a claim that Sunderland have already changed their approach.
The supply is broader than one player. Sunderland's 2 October statistical review, produced with Fantasy Football Scout, credits Granit Xhaka with 13 chances created in the opening league games. It records 10 of Brobbey's 11 shots from inside the box. Those small-sample figures describe the opening weeks; they neither establish his current fitness nor predict his next performance.
Brighton's report of their 3-0 win over Arsenal on 19 September describes an early high regain that ended with David Raya saving Babis Kostoulas's volley. Sunderland's passing under pressure will therefore be one of the useful things to watch.
Brighton also attacked quickly after gaining possession deeper. Bart Verbruggen's throw to Chema Andres began the move for Kostoulas's goal before half-time. A Sunderland attack ending in the goalkeeper's hands could become a defensive test before players have recovered their positions.
Set pieces add another route: Andres headed in Pascal Gross's corner without a challenge for Brighton's third. Yet the clean sheet wasn't proof that Arsenal had no openings. Verbruggen later stopped Kai Havertz one-on-one. The distinction matters when judging how much that single result tells us about Brighton's defence.
Brighton's 2 October club update places them third after a September league sequence of 1-1 against Leeds, 5-0 against Coventry and 3-0 against Arsenal. That is a strong run, but an away match at Sunderland presents a different test from the Arsenal game at the Amex. For the earlier draw, see our Brighton v Leeds match report.
Sunderland's route into this contest is to connect their passers with runners near goal while limiting the turnovers that let Brighton attack quickly. Brobbey's availability changes who can finish those moves; it doesn't remove the need to create them. That is the match-up to assess once the teams are confirmed, rather than treating either September scoreline as a forecast.
