Video poker explained: rules, paytables and RTP

How video poker’s hold-and-draw round works, why Jacks or Better and wild-card games need different paytables, and why RTP does not predict a session’s result.

Video poker deals you five cards and lets you choose which to keep before a replacement draw. The final hand earns a payout only if it meets the game’s paytable. You don’t face another poker player or try to beat a dealer’s hand.

That hold-and-discard decision separates standard video poker from a slot spin. It doesn’t make the game a reliable source of profit, and switching games after losses doesn’t recover money already spent. This guide explains the mechanics, variant differences and return-to-player figures; it isn’t a list of titles currently available in bet365’s UK lobby.

How a standard hand works

The Wizard of Odds rules reference describes a five-card draw from a standard 52-card deck, with additional jokers in joker variants. You select the stake, receive the opening cards and mark the cards to hold. The draw replaces the others with random cards from the remaining deck. Keeping all five means you don’t replace any cards; keeping none means you replace the whole hand.

The game then compares the completed hand with its paytable. A qualifying hand receives the listed payout; a non-qualifying hand receives none. Unlike a poker table, there’s no opponent to bluff and no shared pot to win. A casino game with a dealer, such as Casino Hold’em, follows a different set of rules.

Read the paytable before choosing a strategy

A game name alone doesn’t tell you its payouts. Two versions of Jacks or Better can pay different amounts for a full house or flush, while using the same hand names. The number of credits staked can also affect a payout row. Check whether the display shows credits, a stake multiplier or a cash amount; don’t assume the largest figure applies to every stake.

In a hypothetical paytable, a two-credit winning hand at a £0.20 credit value returns £0.40. If the wager cost one £0.20 credit, the net gain is £0.20. This example explains the arithmetic only; it doesn’t quote a bet365 payout. A one-credit return on a one-credit wager merely returns the stake, even if the screen calls it a win.

Hold choices depend on the full hand and the exact paytable. A blanket rule such as “always keep any pair” can conflict with a different paying combination or draw. Use a strategy reference that matches the version you’re reading, rather than applying a wild-card game’s advice to ordinary Jacks or Better. No decision guarantees what the replacement cards will be.

Why variants need different rules

Jacks or Better pays for a pair of jacks, queens, kings or aces, as well as its other qualifying combinations. A low pair on its own doesn’t qualify. The published tables also show different payouts under the same game family, so one quoted RTP cannot describe every version.

Deuces Wild changes the hand structure through wild twos. Its paytable can distinguish a natural royal flush from one made with wild cards and include a separate four-deuces prize. In Joker Poker, the added joker changes the deck; the Kings or Better version uses a different minimum paying pair. These names don’t establish current UK availability.

Aces-and-faces variants can distinguish four aces, four face cards and other four-of-a-kind hands. For example, the Double Aces and Faces tables pay those categories differently. Check the actual version rather than copying that table into a different game.

For multi-hand games, read the total stake as well as the cost per hand. Ten hands at £0.20 each cost £2 per round. Extra hands don’t turn the game into ten independent chances to recover a £0.20 stake: you’ve committed £2. Any progressive feature needs its own eligibility and payout rules, not assumptions borrowed from a slot jackpot.

RTP is not the chance of winning a hand

bet365’s UK RTP explanation defines return to player as the expected proportion of stakes returned over a large volume of play. Its 96% example means £96 returned per £100 wagered in that long-run model, not a promised £96 from your next £100 session. RTP does not give the probability of finishing a session ahead.

Video-poker return calculations also depend on the paytable and the hold decisions assumed by the calculation. A published figure for one table and strategy is not a blanket return for every game bearing that name. Nor does a figure close to 100% create a 50/50 chance of profit. Check the in-game RTP information, and don’t treat an old review’s percentage as the live setting.

Where to check a bet365 game’s details

The UK Game Rules help page directs readers to the information icon, Menu or Help inside each game. That panel contains the specific paytable, bet limits and mechanics. Read it before placing a wager, including any extra bet or progressive feature; if the rules don’t answer a question, ask support rather than guessing.

Casino video poker and player-versus-player poker are separate products, so don’t assume a poker-room promotion includes a casino video-poker game. Read the offer’s own eligibility rules. BCP’s casino-game comparison explains other game formats. If a loss is affecting your decisions, the poker tilt guide explains why increasing stakes or continuing to play is not a way to undo it.
