Three-card Brag: traditional rules and casino-game checks
Distinguish traditional three-card Brag from dealer games, with a fictional hand comparison and checks for qualification, wagers and settlement.
Three-card Brag can describe a private game between players or a casino game against a dealer. Those are different rule sets. A guide that combines private betting with a casino’s qualification and bonus rules can give you the wrong answer about both the hand and its settlement.
Traditional Brag: cards, rankings and betting
Pagat’s Brag rules describe a standard 52-card deck, three cards each and agreed antes. Strongest to weakest: prial (three equal ranks), running flush (suited sequence), run (mixed-suit sequence), flush, pair, high card. Threes are the highest prial; A-2-3 is the highest sequence. A run beats a flush, unlike ordinary five-card poker.
Private betting can continue around the table. With two players left, paying to “see” normally costs twice the previous bet; the caller loses an equal-hand comparison. Local variants differ, so agree the ranking and betting rules rather than importing a casino paytable.
A paper comparison, not a played hand
Suppose two invented hands are 3♣ 3♦ 3♥ and A♣ A♦ A♥. Under the traditional ranking above, the threes win. That result reverses the familiar assumption that aces must be the strongest three-of-a-kind. It does not establish a casino’s ranking or any payout.
Casino Brag: play against the dealer
A casino version can involve an ante followed by a fold-or-play decision, a dealer qualifying threshold and separate side bets. For example, Betfair’s own Live 3 Card Brag explanation describes a player-versus-dealer game, folding as losing the ante, an additional play wager and a queen-or-better dealer threshold. That is an operator-specific illustration, not confirmation of bet365’s current UK catalogue or rules.
Check the individual game’s help screen before assigning a result. Which cards determine qualification? What happens to the ante and play wager if the dealer does not qualify? Does an equal hand return both bets? How does the bonus or side bet settle? A qualifying threshold alone does not answer those questions.
Keep each wager separate in your notes. A hand can have one result on the main comparison and another under a side-bet paytable. A bonus payment is not automatically a profit for the whole round; compare it with every amount committed and the game’s definition of a returned stake.
Does Q-6-4 guarantee favourable odds?
No hand threshold, including Q-6-4, establishes a profitable game by itself. A strategy recommendation needs the exact ranking, qualification rule, permitted play wager and settlement schedule. Do not treat a shorthand rule borrowed from another three-card game as proof that the odds favour you. This guide makes no return-to-player or house-edge claim.
