1. Every game starts with an ante
When you start the game, you’ve got to place your initial bet. Just like in certain poker games, this is called an ante. This mandatory wager is placed by everyone before the cards are dealt. But of course, the exact cost of this ante varies depending on the table you’re playing on.
2. You get three face down cards
After the antes are laid down, your dealer will dish you out three face-down cards. Face down means that you shouldn’t show anyway else, in case you’ve forgotten that from poker! Now the name 3 card brag is starting to make sense, right?
3. Assess that hand
Now it’s time to figure out your hand strength. Just like in poker (or at least regular poker games), the object is to have the highest ranking hand. Here are the rankings you need to know, from strongest to weakest:
- Prial: means three-of-a-kind
- Running flush: three consecutive cards of the same suit
- Run: three consecutive cards of mixed suits
- Flush: three non-consecutive cards of the same suit
- Pair: Two cards of the same rank and one unmatched card
4. Now it’s time to act
Think you’ve got a good hand up your sleeve? Then you can bet. Typically, your bet is going to be equal to the ante you put in at the start of the hand. Or if you’re not feeling it this time, then you can fold and the action goes on without you. You lose that initial ante, but nothing else.
5. A winner is crowned
After that betting round, it’s time to figure out who wins. Everyone (apart from those who folded) reveals their cards and you can quickly and easily see who’s hand ranks highest and, therefore, who’s won.
6. Bonus payments
In some brag variants, you get a bonus payment when you hit upon a specific card combination in your hand. These bonuses are independent of the main game, but are tidy little earners if you do strike lucky. Check the game’s rules before you play to see what you should look out for, if anything.
7. And the fun starts all over again
