Germany’s Koray Aldemir is the 2021 World Series of Poker Main Event champion, beating a field of 6,650 players over nine days of play to win the $8 million prize and his first WSOP gold bracelet. In addition to poker’s biggest prize, Aldemir also eclipses the $20 million mark in lifetime tournament winnings.
The final hand came while Aldemir and heads-up opponent George Holmes were virtually even in chips with Aldemir holding just a slight lead. Aldemir was dealt T7s while Holmes had KQo. The flop came a 10 of hearts, 2 of hearts and 7 of spades, giving Aldemir two pair and two overcards for Holmes.
The turn came the King of spades and the river the nine of clubs, giving Holmes top pair on the turn before he went all-in on the river. Aldemir called after some thought to become the 2021 World Series of Poker champion. Check out how the action unfolded below:
Aldemir had the chip lead as early as Day 5 and bounced around the top of the leaderboard for the next few days, including chip leads after Day 7 and Day 8.
After a delayed start on Wednesday, the WSOP got underway at around 2:30 PM PT with Koray Aldemir, Jack Oliver and George Holmes each with an eye on poker’s biggest prize. Aldemir started the day in a dominant position as the chip leader with 264 million, followed by the United Kingdom’s Jack Oliver and Georgia “home game player,” George Holmes.
In total, 223 hands were played at the final table with Holmes taking a brief lead around hand 170. From there, the players bounced the even mark until the final hand put away Holmes.
Although Aldemir came away with the victory and the coveted WSOP bracelet, all players who made the final table became instant millionaires with their showings on Tuesday and Wednesday.
