What Is Bet365’s Each Way Extra?
The first thing to clarify is what exactly Each Way Extra at bet365 means. Specifically in this case, for golf (it is also available across other sports too, notably horse racing).
In terms of Golf, Each Way Extra offers customers the chance to be more flexible with their each way bets.
To explain how, let’s explain the standard Each Way bet at bet365 Sport.
- Each Way Betting at bet365.
There are three key parts of a standard each way golf betting market.
- The odds offered on the chosen golfer to win the tournament.
- The percentage of those to win odds that will be paid out if the golfer is backed each way and finishes in one of the place positions. This is usually 1/5 of the stated odds for golf betting.
- The number of place positions that the each way bet will pay out on.
Now, each way bettors will know that this type of bet comprises of two betting lines. The first part of the bet covers the To Win market and the second part of the bet stake covers the Place part of the bet.
This is why a £10 each way bet costs £20. As two-unit stakes (£10) are required to cover both parts of the bet. (£10 on the selection to win, £10 on the selection to place).
- How Each Way Extra Bets for Golf Differ
An Each Way Extra Bet offers more flexibility than a standard each way bet by modifying a number of factors.
Essentially, bet365 will offer a trade-off for customers. They can select the standard each way bet (which pays out for the top 3 places including ties). And they will receive the standard odds offered on the golfer to win the event.
But they can also increase the number of places that will pay out, but by increasing the number of places that pay out, the odds on that golfer to win will decrease.
Some of the common Each Way Extra options on golf majors include:
- Each Way Extra – 1/5 for the top 3 finishers (full odds)
- Each Way Extra – 1/5 for the top 8 finishers
- Each Way Extra – 1/5 for the top 10 finishers
- Each Way Extra – 1/5 for the top 12 finishers
For the options with 8-12 place payouts, these will be offered with reducing odds.
For example, if you wanted to back Scottie Scheffler to win the tournament, you will see that his odds decrease in the screenshot below:

You can also see that pattern of shorter odds/more places are followed with the other golfers shown in the snapshot.
With Each Way Extra in golf, you can elect to trade off some of the odds to get more paying places on the bet, or you can reduce the number of paying places to get better odds on your selection.
Which of course raises and interesting question.
Is There A ‘Sweet Spot’ For an Each Way Extra Golf Bet?
As bettors we want value, so finding value in a bet is important. Judging what is the right number of places to be paid out, combined with the odds on a selection, is key to getting better value returns and making better value bets.
In my view, it is the odds of the selection which will decide which is the best Each Way Extra value option for you, rather than the player or the number of places.
Here’s why:-
In the screenshot above, Scottie Scheffler has standard odds of 5.00 to win the tournament, with each way paying out at 1/5 of those odds on the top 3 places.
Here is the possible payouts they could receive based on each of the options available in the Each Way Extra markets for both Scottie Scheffler and Tony Finau.

Here you can see that the relatively short odds on Scheffler mean that if he doesn’t win the event, then you are going to make a loss, no matter which option you select. In this case, taking the standard Each Way option of E/W 1/5 for 1st to 3rd places makes the most sense.
But if we then compare this with making the same bet but on Tony Finau instead, that changes the value offered in the Each Way Extra markets significantly.

In this data set, you can see that regardless of which option you select, Tony Finau will guarantee you a profit of between £216 and £480 if he wins the tournament and a profit of between £26 and £70 if he finishes in one of the stated places.
In this case, the difference in payouts is such that maybe taking the options that offer a higher number of position payouts is the better option here in terms of maximising your chances of a profit.
- Each Way Extra Betting – General Rule of Thumb
So you can see clearly in these examples that the odds on your chosen golfer will directly influence which is the best value bet for you to make on the Each Way Extra market.
And the general rule of thumb is that the longer the odds on the golfer, then it is more beneficial to select the Each Way Extra option with the greater number of paying places. The shorter the odds on the golfer, the Each Way Extra options with fewer paying places are better value bets.
What Golf Tournaments Does Bet365 Sport Offer Each Way Extra Betting On?
