After a weekend of FA Cup action, which gave a number of teams a chance to rest some key first team players, the Premier League is back in action from Tuesday night with an unusual set of games. We have a selection of games from Matchday 18 being played, with the remaining games from Matchday 18 set to be played next week in midweek.

In addition to those, we also have a number of rearranged fixtures from matches that were postponed earlier in the season. Which all makes for a somewhat unusual collection of fixtures that are a little different to your usual matchday.

So, what are the best bets people are going to be considering for the Premier League action during midweek? Let’s take a closer look and find out exactly what games are being played across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights this week.

Premier League Midweek Action

The games taking place in midweek this week are a mixture of games from Matchday 18 (with the remaining games set to be played in the middle of next week) and a number of matches that were postponed earlier in the season but which have been rearranged to be played this week.

The remaining Matchday 18 games, plus more games that were postponed and rearranged, will be played in the middle of next week (19th – 21st January).

Anyway, here are the games scheduled to be played this week and our pick of the best bets we feel are on offer for each game.

Tuesday 12th January

  • Sheffield United v Newcastle United

Sheffield United picked up a much-needed win in the FA Cup away to Bristol Rovers at the weekend, but their search for a Premier League win continues and I think they will struggle to get that here against a defensively well-organised Newcastle side.

I see both these teams as being very similar, both are built on defence and neither score too many goals. I just feel that Newcastle has that extra bit of quality in every department of the game and that I think will be the key here.

I can see this being decided by a single goal, maybe from a set piece, and I think it is most likely that Newcastle will be the ones to score it to inflict yet more misery on the winless Blades.

Tip – Newcastle United to win – 21/10.

  • Burnley v Manchester United

A win for Manchester United here could see them go top of the table, with a trip to Liverpool to come at the weekend. However, they face a Burnley side that have lost just one of their last seven games to move themselves clear of the drop zone at the foot of the table.

As good as Burnley’s form has been of late, Manchester United have been exceptional on the road this season domestically and with so many players geared to playing on the counterattack, it is hard to see a way for shot-shy Burnley to keep United out and score enough to win this game.

As such, I can’t see Burnley finding the net and I think United will score at least one, maybe two goals to secure the top spot in the Premier League heading into the weekend, which will add extra spice to that Liverpool clash.

Tip – Manchester United to win and both teams to score – No – 7/5

  • Wolverhampton Wanderers v Everton

Wolves have had a sticky run of games where they have perhaps not got the results their performances have deserved, especially against Man Utd and Brighton. Now they face an Everton side that has clear designs on a top four spot at the moment.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have been strong but their loss at home to West Ham last time out was a big blow for their Champions League hopes. They need a win here to push themselves back up into top four contention in what is proving to be an open and hugely competitive Premier League season.

However, Wolves are looking stronger now and I think they have a good game plan to cope with Raul Jimenez’s absence. As such, I think while the Toffees won’t be beaten here, they won’t pick up  a win and the game will end all-square.

Tip – Draw – 11/5.

Wednesday 13th January

  • Manchester City v Brighton

Last week was a fantastic one for Manchester City, not only did they win away at Chelsea and Manchester United, they reached the Carabao Cup Final and also the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with a win over Birmingham at the weekend.

Pep Guardiola also got chance to rest a number of key players ahead of this home game with Brighton and after winning their last three in the Premier League in strong fashion, I expect City to do likewise here.

Brighton required penalties to get past Newport in the FA Cup at the weekend and those extra minutes in the legs won’t help them here. This is going to be a very tough game for Graham Potter’s side and I think it is one they will not get anything positive from.

Tip – Correct Score – Man City 3-0 Brighton – 13/2.

  • Aston Villa v Tottenham

Villa have been decimated by illness and were forced to play a youth team in their FA Cup 3rd Round defeat to Liverpool on Friday night. It is going to be very interesting to see whether this game even goes ahead, let alone what team Villa are able to put out for the game.

I am assuming Villa will have at least a majority of first team players to pick from for this game and if they do, they will give Tottenham a real test, but it is one that I think Spurs with Son and Kane in such superb form can pass.

All being well and assuming two relatively first choice teams, this will be a close game and I can see both sides scoring and perhaps Spurs coming out as 2-1 winners. However, I would add a caveat here and say if news from Villa having to play a much weaker side then I would probably change this bet to a much simple Spurs away win.

Tip – Correct Score – Aston Villa 1-2 Tottenham – 8/1.

Thursday 14th January

  • Arsenal v Crystal Palace

After struggling for a long time, Arsenal have found their form once again winning all of their last four, although they won’t have enjoyed being taken to extra time in their FA Cup third-round win over Newcastle at the weekend. Palace suffered defeat at Wolves on Friday night in that competition and Roy Hodgson’s men will probably rue taking on Arsenal at a time when they have found their feet and are looking like a very dangerous side once more.

Palace do not score many goals, especially away from home and Arsenal’s back line has tightened up significantly in the last few weeks conceding just one goal in their last four.  Palace have drawn a blank in three of their last five games.

I can’t see too many goals being scored here, but any that do go in, I feel are most likely to be for the home side in what should be another Arsenal victory.

Tip – Arsenal to win and both teams to score – No – 6/4
