Our third weekend of NFL action is now in the bag and what a weekend it proved to be with now just two teams in the NFL not having achieved a win so far this season, and just two teams with 100% winning record after three games.

Week Three was a week where some of the underperforming teams of the first two weeks of the season bit back and there was big wins for the likes of the Bengals, Titans, Colts, Panthers and Falcons.

However, there was also surprise as in two key games there were surprise results with the Dolphins beating the Bills and the Packers getting the better of the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay.

Let’s now take a look at some of the major stories emanating from an eyebrow raising week 3 of action in the NFL.

NFL Matchday 3 – Main Stories

Some of my Divisional Winner Predictions are certainly looking a little ropey at the moment and some surprising losses this week added to that. Still, the season is young and there is still plenty of football to be played.

Half-Fit Herbert Won’t Cut It For Chargers – Justin Herbert played against the Jaguars, but should he have? It was clear his rib injury was impacting him and the Chargers were unusually toothless as the Jaguars ran out comfortable winners on the road in Los Angeles. Now that’s a sentence I’ve not written in a very long time.

Dolphins Allow 500+ Yards Of Offense But Still Beat The Bills – The Buffalo Bills offense is seriously talented, but they are not invincible. The Miami Dolphins played a very shrewd game to keep the Bills close and then land the stunning blow with Tua Tagavailoa playing a key role in this stunning victory which opens up the AFC East.

Rodgers Wins Battle Of Broken Offenses In Tampa – With plenty of issues at Wide Receiver for both teams, it was Aaron Rodgers who led his Packers to a narrow win over the Buccaneers. Defenses ruled the day despite stellar QB’s on show and how Brady must be regretting Gronkowski’s decision to retire this off season.

Smith Shines As Eagles Make Genuine Claim For #1 Seed – The Eagles made it 3-0 on the season with a comfortable win over the Commanders. All 24 of their points came in the 2nd quarter with Jalen Hurts once again in solid form and Devonta Adams having 169 yards receiving in a dominant display by a team pushing hard to be ranked top in this weeks Power Rankings.

NFL Star Performers of the Week – Offense/ST

  • QB Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars) – 28/39 for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • TE David Njoku (Browns) – 9 receptions, 89 yards, 1 touchdown
  • QB Joe Burrow (Bengals) – 23/36, 275 yards, 3 touchdowns
  • WR Davante Parker (Patriots) – 5 receptions for 156 yards
  • QB Lamar Jackson (Ravens) 18/29 for 218 yards, 4 touchdowns, 107 yards rushing, 1 touchdown
  • WR Mack Hollins (Raiders) – 8 receptions for 158 yards and a touchdown
  • WR Devonta Smith (Eagles) – 8 receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown
  • QB Jalen Hurts (Eagles) – 22/35 for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns
  • RB Khalil Herbert (Bears) – 20 carries for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns
  • RB Cordarrelle Patterson (Falcons) – 17 carries for 141 yards and a touchdown
  • WR Marquise Brown (Cardinals) – 14 receptions for 140 yards

NFL Star Performers of The Week – Defense

  • Miami Dolphins – They bent but did not break against the Bills, coming up with big plays time and time again to deny Buffalo despite the Bills racking up 500+ yards of offense.
  • Indianapolis Colts – The Colts defense turned up to keep the Chiefs in check allowing them to score an unexpected win late in the game.
  • Denver Broncos – When you only score 11 points, you need a big performance from your D to win games. The Broncos got that sacking Jimmy G four times and intercepting him once.
  • Green Bay Packers – Sacking. Tom Brady three times, the Packers strong defensive showing ensured they came away with the win over the Bucs.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars – The Chargers may have had some players banged up but keeping them to just 10 points in L.A is a fine effort by a fast-improving Jags.
  • Philadelphia Eagles – Sacked Carson Wentz eight times and kept the Commanders to 8 points in their victory over their divisional rivals.

NFL Rookies Of The Week

  • WR Romeo Doubs (Packers) – 8 receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown.
  • LB Devin Lloyd (Jaguars) – 7 tackles, 3 Patted Down, 1 interception
  • WR Jelani Woods (Colts) – 2 receiving touchdowns
  • S Jalen Pitre (Texans) – 2 interceptions, Fumble Recovery, Sack, 2 Tackles for a loss
  • RB Dameon Pierce (Texans) – 101 yards from scrimmage, 1 rushing TD
  • WR Chris Olave (Saints) – 9 receptions for 147 yards.

NFL Key Injuries

  • QB Mac Jones (Patriots) – Left the game late on with a high ankle sprain and is likely to miss some time according to early reports.
  • EDGE Joey Bosa (Chargers) – Left the game early with a groin injury. He is likely to miss a number of weeks.
  • OT Rashawn Slater (Chargers) – Torn biceps and is out for the remainder of the season.
  • RB Dalvin Cook (Vikings) – Dislocated his shoulder in the 4th quarter against the Lions, but he could still be ok to play next Sunday.
  • OT Trent Williams (49ers)– Was forced out against Denver due to an ankle injury and is likely to miss a number of weeks.
  • RB David Montgomery (Bears) – Picked up a knee and ankle injury and looks likely to miss a number of weeks for Chicago.
  • RB D’Andre Swift (Lions) – Likely to miss next week’s game with a shoulder injury.

NFL Bonehead Play of The Week

Davis Mills Texans QB threw a key interception late in the game against the Bears, which meant that the Bears could move the ball downfield and kick the game winning field goal from 30 yards as time expired. It was Mills second interception of the day.
