NFL Week Four Review And Week Five NFL Betting Tips

By Ian John
October 23, 2023

Another week of NFL action is in the history books and we now have just two teams left with a 100% winning record, with another couple of teams still seeking their first win of the NFL Season heading into Week Five.

A large number of NFL teams are on 2-2 records, which does kind of make it hard to judge them. Are they a fortunate 2-2, or are they an unlucky 2-2 team?

There are some very strong NFL teams with 3-1 records too, including a couple of teams not expected to have that kind of record heading into Week 5.

NFL Betting Tip

This week, we’re going to review week four and then give you our tips for the Week Five NFL games. All the odds will be provided by bet365 Sport as always and they were correct at the time of writing but may have changed in the meantime.

Also don’t miss our NFL Power Rankings to see how much has changed following Week 4.

Remember, Week 5 is when teams start having Bye Weeks in the NFL, which continues to be the case through to Week 14 (although no team has a bye week on Week 8 or Week 12 of the NFL season.

NFL Betting Performance From Last Week –  10/16

  • Winners (Season Total Winners) – 10 (34)
  • Losers (Season Total Losers)– 6 (15)

Once again we hit several more correct NFL predictions than incorrect this past week and on average we are hitting 11 correct score picks a week out of 16, which is a percentage hit rate of 69%. That’s a solid success rate.

Let’s hope we can push that percentage amount over the 70% mark with this week’s set of NFL betting selections.

NFL Betting Tip

Three Notable NFL Performances – Team

  • Dolphins Humbled As Bills Show Talent On Offense & Defense

Last week, the Dolphins put up 70 points against the Broncos. This week, the Buffalo Bills put up 48 points on the Dolphins by the end of the third quarter as the ‘Fins lost their first game of the season against their big divisional rivals. Josh Allen and Stefan Diggs were the masters on offense for the Bills, both putting up fantastic numbers, but it was the Bills defense that probably gave them that platform as they got to grips with the Dolphins in the second half to hand them the loss.

  • Cowboys Bounce Back To Record Big Win Over Patriots

Dallas’ much vaunted defense may be down a couple of key players but they still scored twice against a Patriots offense that looked as clueless as it did toothless at time. Mac Jones struggles at QB continued leading to Bailey Zappe coming in late in the game. The Cowboys were efficient on offense and clinical on defense, capitalising on every Patriots mistake to run out impressive and comfortable winners.

  • Lions In Statement Win Over Packers In All NFC North Clash

After a below par performance in a short week, the Lions needed a win in this crucial NFC North clash and they got it. Not only that, Dan Campbell’s team won in Green Bay which not only gives them a lead in the North but also a head to head advantage over the team most likely to challenge them for top spot. David Montgomery laid the foundation for the win with a fantastic display from running back as the Lions got back to winning ways.

Worst Three NFL Performances – Team

  • Bears Crumble As Wilson Leads Broncos To Comeback Win

Justin Fields passed for 335 yards and four touchdowns but still watched as the Bears defense crumbled in the second half against the Broncos. A fourth quarter meltdown that saw them try to claim a first down near the end of the game, miss it, and allow the Broncos to kick a field goal for the win. Make no mistake, the Broncos are nowhere near back. They still look woeful on defense, but Matt Eberflus is going to have to answer some tough questions from Chicago local and NFL media this week.

  • Bengals Season Goes From Bad To Worse In Titans Loss

What has happened to Joe Burrow and the Bengals? The team has gone from almost reaching the NFL Super Bowl in the last couple of years, to struggling to a 1-3 start. They mustered just 3 points from their opening drive against the Titans but after that fell apart, allowing a 1-2 Titans team to run up 27 points unanswered. There was a time this Bengals offence would have ran up points at will against a disjointed secondary. It appears that time has gone.

  • Steelers Struggles Laid Bare By CJ Stroud And The Texans

Pittsburgh are now 2-2 in the NFL, and this week’s performance against the Texans showed why they are unlikely to challenge for the top spot in the AFC North. Their dominant defense could only slow, not stop the Texans offense led by rookie CJ Stroud, while the Steelers offense was almost immaterial for most of the game.  Late on Kenny Pickett was ruled out of the game and could be set to miss some time for the Steelers for whom only Najee Harris offered any kind of offensive threat. When all your points come from your kicker you know you are in bad shape.

Three Notable NFL Performances – Individual

  • RB David Montgomery (Lions) – 32 carries, 121 yards, 3 TD rushing, 2 receptions for 20 yards.

The Detroit Lions had a statement win over the Packers in Green Bay and it was their running back David Montgomery that did the heavy lifting. He carried the ball 32 times for 121 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns, as well as adding 20 yards on the ground too. Montgomery’s relentless running kept the Packers defense on its toes the entire game and inspired the Lions to a key road win in the NFC North.

  • WR Nico Collins (Texans) – 7 receptions for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns

Texans quarterback CJ Stroud continues to shine, leading his team to a big win over the Steelers this past weekend, but it is his link up with WR Nico Collins that played a key role in that win as Collins racked up 168 yards against a fearsome Steelers defense, scoring two touchdowns that would prove key in the Texans fine win over the men from Steel City.

  • S Antoine Winfield Jr (Buccaneers) – 6 tackles, 3 assists, 1 sack, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble

Tampa’s suffocating defense never relented against the Saints and laid the foundation for the win here and nobody embodied that spirit more than Winfield Jr. He was all over the field, registering 6 tackles with 3 other assists, a sack, two tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and an interception. The safety gave the Buccaneers defense a heightened intensity in this NFC divisional game which laid the foundation for their victory.

NFL Performers of the Week – Week Four

  • Team – Buffalo Bills
  • Offensive Player – RB Christian McCaffrey (49ers) – 20 carries, 106 yards, 3 touchdowns, 7 receptions for 71 yards and 1 touchdown.
  • Defensive Player – LB Nicholas Morrow (Eagles) – 9 tackles, 1 assist, 3 sacks, 3 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble
  • Special Teams Player – K Ka’imi Fairbairn (Texans) – 3 field goals, 3 extra points
  • Rookie – WR Puka Nacua (Rams), 9 catches, 163 yards, 1 TD (Game winner)
