Man we love nothing more than doing a deep dive into poker culture. If you do too, you’re in for a treat with this deep dive into poker hand nicknames.

Like the A-Z of poker terminology, we feel like once you know a little bit more of these names, it gets you into the mindset of poker players.

Kinda like knowing the history of games like Texas Hold’em or even more modern games like Six Plus, it’s really interesting to have that bit of extra trivia under your belt.

Plus it puts you in a good position to know some of these poker hand nicknames if you’re watching poker vids, reading strategy books, kicking back with a poker flick or listening to podcasts about the felt. Poker players love a bit of jargon. So this can put you on a more level playing field.

And also, if you’re hosting a DIY poker night, it can also give you some cool tidbits to share with your pals. Or even if you find yourself playing poker on your next vacation or playing online at bet365 (bonus code here), it’s just nice to have that bit of extra lingo.

Poker hand nicknames

1. Heart-breaker

Hit it, Mariah Carey. This is what you call a flush of hearts if you lose with it.

2. Fibonacci

This one goes out to the nerds! It’s for when you get a AA235 or a 2358K. And for the non-nerds, this is for when in a series of numbers, each number is the sum of the two preceding ones.

3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

You might not think there’s anything funny about hitting a AAAAK hand. But we bet it’ll illicit a smirk when you hear this poker hand nickname is in honor of the hilarious 1970s British King Arthur spoof film.

4. Athos, Porthos and Aramis

And now for a somewhat earlier pop culture reference. Who are Athos, Porthos and Aramis? The Three Musketeers, of course, from the famous 1844 Alexandre Dumas tale. And in poker hand nicknames nomenclature, it’s also AAA.

5. Golf bag

What do you pack in your golf bag? Clubs. That’s right, this is the poker hand nickname for a flush of clubs.

6. All the primes

Fairly self-explanatory, this is a hand of 2357J or 357JK, also known as all the prime numbers.

7. Even Stevens

Meanwhile, if you’ve got all evens (like 2468T, 468TQ or 68TQA), you can use the Even Stevens poker hand nickname.

8. Digging deep

You might as well be out in the garden with your flush of spades.

9. Windsor Castle

Both a royal residence in Berkshire, England and the royal-stuffed hand of AAAKK.

10. The Dead Man’s Hand

The Dead Man’s Hand is possibly the most famous poker hand nickname around. This is most commonly known as black AA88 and an unknown fifth card.

11. The Nativity

Based on the Christian nativity story, where the three kings visit Joseph and Mary to witness Jesus Christ’s birth. So it’s KKKAA.

12. Village People

No, we’re not trying to construct some sort of YMCA hand. Instead we’re all about the queens with QQQQ.

13. Jazz

This one goes out to everyone who used to love writing notes on their calculator. It’s JA55, of course.

14. Decked out

We’re getting fancy over here with our flush of diamonds.
