Print suggested darts checkout routes from 170 down to 2, the seven bogey numbers as well as practical advice on doubles and recovering from a miss.

A darts checkout chart gives you a route from your remaining score to exactly zero, ending on a double. The highest finish with three darts is 170: treble 20, treble 20, bullseye. Seven scores below it cannot be finished in one visit: 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159.

At BCP, our darts guides cover the rules, terminology and finishing combinations. Use the score tables for a suggested route, then adjust for the number of darts left and the double you prefer.

How a checkout works

In standard double-out 501, each visit reduces the score left. You must reach exactly zero with a double or the inner bull. Scoring too many, leaving one or reaching zero without that finishing double busts the visit, so your score returns to its starting point. The DRA rulebook for competition darts sets out these finishing rules; our guide to darts rules and terminology covers the wider game.

How to read the darts checkout chart

S means single, D means double and T means treble. Bull means the inner bull worth 50; 25 means the outer bull. Read each route from left to right. T20 / S20 / D20, for example, scores 60 + 20 + 40 to finish 120.

The darts column counts the darts in the suggested route. It does not always show the fewest possible darts: on 50 the table keeps S18 / D16 as a ring-double route, while Bull finishes it in one dart. On 34 the chart shows D17; players who prefer the D16 bed can take 2 then D16 instead. A route using three darts is unavailable if you only have two left.

The checkout combinations guide explains why routes depend on the darts in hand and your favourite double. These are suggested combinations, not the only legal ways out. Bogey rows have no three-dart double-out finish.

The seven bogey numbers

169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159 are bogey numbers because no combination of three darts can reach zero on a double. From 230, a score of 60 leaves 170; a score of 61 leaves 169. The extra point removes the chance of finishing on the next visit. Plan the leave as well as the score.

Two-dart and one-dart finishes

The highest two-dart finish is 110: T20 / Bull. The same bull finish also works two darts on 107 (T19 / Bull), 104 (T18 / Bull) and 101 (T17 / Bull). The chart tables keep conventional three-dart routes into a ring double for those scores, so use the two-dart bull only when you have two darts left and prefer the centre. That still does not make every lower score a two-dart finish; some numbers need three, so match the route to the darts you have left.

Every even score from 2 to 40 is a one-dart finish on its matching double. The inner Bull is the other one-dart option, worth 50, which is why 50 appears as S18 / D16 in the table with Bull as the one-dart alternative. An odd remainder needs a scoring dart before the final double; 33, for example, can go S1 / D16, and 34 can go D17 or 2 / D16 if you want to stay on the D16 side.

Choosing a route and recovering from a miss

On 77, T19 / D10 is a two-dart route. If your first dart lands in single 19, you have 58 left and two darts: S18 / D20 still finishes. Learn that single-dart recovery alongside the intended treble.

D16 leaves 16 if you hit single 16, then D8 leaves 8 if you hit single 8. That sequence is a reason to practise the 32 side of the board. D20 is another useful target, but a single 20 leaves 20 and a single 10 after that leaves 10. Choose the route you can recall without rushing.

How to remember combination checkouts

Start with the doubles, then practise odd scores just above them. For a short session, work through 41, 43, 45 and 47 using S9, S11, S13 and S15 to leave D16. Next, try the same numbers with a different final double and compare how often a miss leaves another shot.

For higher finishes, say the remainder after every dart. On 121, T20 leaves 61, T15 leaves 16 and D8 finishes. If you hit single 20 first, the remainder is 101 and the original route no longer applies. Recalculate before throwing again.

Checkouts in televised darts

A 180 is the highest scoring visit, but it cannot finish a double-out leg because its final dart is a treble. The maximum checkout is lower: two T20s leave the 50-point Bull. Our ten best darts players of all time guide covers the players behind the sport’s history.

Highest Checkout at bet365

bet365 uses Highest Checkout for markets based on finishing scores. Its rules distinguish two-way and three-way versions, so read the selection and tie treatment before comparing them. A market heading in the rules does not mean that market is offered on every match. BCP’s bet365 Bonus Codes guide covers the separate registration offer and our bonus code BET247.

Checkout questions

Why is 170 the highest checkout?

Two treble 20s score 120 and the Bull adds 50. That is the most two scoring darts and a legal finishing double can total. Three treble 20s make 180, but do not satisfy double-out.

Can you check out 166?

No. It is one of the seven bogeys below 170. A score below the maximum is not automatically a legal three-dart finish.

What is a good checkout percentage?

There is no single pass mark for every standard of player. Checkout percentage measures successful finishes against darts at a finishing double; it is different from a three-dart scoring average. For practice, record your own hits and attempts consistently so you can compare sessions.
