The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event is the biggest tournament in the world. And after eight days of action, involving a record 10,112 players, we now know the nine players that will take a seat at the final table.
All have a chance of claiming the top prize of $10 million, and all are guaranteed a seven-figure payday from this biggest poker tournament.
What is interesting is that there are a number of players in that final nine who would ordinarily be classed as ‘online’ specialists. A little reminder perhaps to those that enjoy a game at a site like bet365 Poker, that there is a chance you can learn enough online to challenge the very best!

Since 2020, Caesars Entertainment have hosted the event but the tournaments roots go back to 1970, when it was first conceived by Las Vegas casino owner and poker player Benny Binion.
That first year saw a select group of poker professionals invited to participate in a number of different forms of the game. That included five-card stud, deuce to seven low-ball draw, razz, seven-card stud and Texas hold’em.
A secret ballot elected the overall winner and it was Johnny Moss who was the first event WSOP Main Event winner as a result.
However, the following year, a freeze-out format was adopted and six players each paid a buy in of $5,000 to compete, with Johnny Moss once again landing the top prize.
Over the years, the number of entrants competing slowly started to increase and the buy-in also increased to $10,000 in 1972 and has remained at that level ever since.
By 1982, the number of entrants climbed to over 100. However, it was the poker boom of the mid 2000s that saw the number of entries skyrocket, especially after Chris Moneymaker’s win in 2003, as entries went from 839 in 2003 to 2576 in 2004.
A new record of over 10,000 competitors was set in 2023 (10,043) when Daniel Weinman won, but this has been beaten in 2024 with 10,112 entries into the Main Event.
*This record could be beaten by the WSOP Main Event 2024 winner top prize.
Now that we’ve refreshed our knowledge of this WSOP Main Event, let’s look ahead to the action coming up on the final table this year!
A total of nine players remain from 10,112 entrants in the WSOP Main Event 2024. The final table set up, together with the number of chips each player holds, is shown below.
Chip leader Jordan Griff enjoyed a slice of luck that paved the way for him to be leading heading into the final table. On the first hand of Day 8, he was all-in with pocket queens against pocket threes, only to see a three land on the flop.
The turn didn’t help him, but he landed a queen on the river to hit a better set and put himself in prime position heading into the final table.
Two players at the final table already own WSOP bracelets, one is Brian Kim, who has the second-highest chip stack and the other is Joe Serock.
Nicklas Astedt is better known as one of the best online poker players of all-time and is showing his skills have transferred nicely to the real-world tables.
Day 8 wasn’t a great day for Frenchman Malo Latinois who had held the chip lead after Day 7, but who finished Day 8 with the second fewest number of chips out of the nine players at the final table.
With a day off on Monday 15th July, the players return to the tables on Tuesday to battle it out to see who makes it into the final four. Then we can see who will take the top prize and become the latest WSOP Main Event Champion!
