The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event has set a new record with an astounding 10,112 players entering the tournament. This surpasses last year's record of 10,043 players, making it the largest field in the history of the event.
The tournament, held in Las Vegas, is known as the world's most prestigious poker event, featuring a $10,000 buy-in. The prize pool for this year's event is a staggering $94,041,600, with the top 1,517 finishers guaranteed to win money.
Day 4 of the 2024 WSOP Main Event was filled with excitement and drama. The bubble burst at around 1:45 p.m. PT, marking the point where the last player was eliminated before all remaining players were guaranteed to win money.
Among the notable players who saw their dreams end on this day were Lucas Reeves and Christian Stratmeyer. Reeves lost a significant hand with pocket kings against Marcelo Tadeu Aziz Junior‘s pocket aces, resulting in his elimination.
Stratmeyer was also eliminated after losing a hand with Ace-King against Terrance Reid‘s Eight-Three, who flopped trips.
The bubble burst was a dramatic moment, with six players at risk of busting one spot from the money at separate tables.
Lucas Reeves seven-bet jammed with KxKx but lost to AxAx held by Marcelo Tadeu Aziz Junior when the board ran out unfavorably for him. Christian Stratmeyer jammed with AxKx but lost to Terrance Reidโs Eight-Three after Reid flopped trips.
Both Reeves and Stratmeyer split the $15,000 prize for the co-bubble position, receiving $7,500 each. Through a high-card draw, Stratmeyer received a free entry into the next year's (2025) WSOP Main Event and was declared the official bubble boy of the event.
Shortly after the bubble burst, Daniel Negreanu was eliminated from the tournament despite having only a few big blinds throughout Day 4.
Other notable players still in contention include six former Main Event winners: Koray Aldemir, Joe McKeehen, Scott Blumstein, Robert Varkonyi, Espen Jorstad, and defending champion Daniel Weinman.
Additionally, six Poker Hall of Famers are still in the running: Brian Rast, Phil Ivey, John Hennigan, Todd Brunson, Erik Seidel, and Daniel Negreanu.
A significant highlight of the 2024 WSOP Main Event is Tom Dwan‘s achievement of recording his first-ever WSOP Main Event cash.
This is also his first WSOP cash of any kind since 2011. Midway through Day 4, Dwan is moving up the chip counts, showcasing his skill and determination. Known primarily by his online poker handle ‘durrrr', Dwan has played the highest stakes cash games globally and is a regular on famous televised poker shows.
When the money bubble burst on Day 4, it marked Dwanโs first cash in this tournament and only his 11th career WSOP tournament cash.
The 2024 WSOP Main Event was not without controversy. Just before the Day 3 dinner break, an incident occurred at a table inside the Horseshoe Event Center.
As players were heading to break, a possible angle shoot took place. Another player, not involved in the hand, had to be escorted out and penalized. The action folded around to Rayane Bouieb on the button, who raised. The small blind folded, and the big blind flashed his hand (Jx2x) but hadn't technically folded.
Exposing cards mid-pot is against tournament rules. After the cards were exposed, Bouieb tossed his cards into the muck, and the big blind argued he hadnโt folded his hand.
A floor supervisor ruled that the pot should go to the big blind. Thomas Zanot, another player not involved in the hand, criticized this ruling and the behavior of the big blind.
Security escorted Zanot out of the area due to his angry criticism, and he received a one-round penalty to be served after a 75-minute dinner break. During his penalty, Zanot was interviewed by Poker News and noted that Bouieb didnโt speak English and asked for help against what he saw as an angle shoot. Zanot believed it was clear that the big blind meant to fold his hand.
After the bubble burst, several notable players were eliminated, including defending champion Daniel Weinman and popular pro Daniel Negreanu.
Despite these eliminations, the tournament continues with under 1,000 players remaining from the record-starting field of 10,112. The first-place winner will receive $10 million and the coveted WSOP bracelet.
The final table participants will earn at least $1,000,000 each, with the minimum cash payout set at $15,000.
