You’re a sports fan. You love to travel. Well then, my friend, you’re going to be very interested in these sports getaways.
Today, we’re here to inspire you with some amazing experiences around the world. Some of these are world famous, while others are a little more niche.
So whether you want to see some living legends in action or you want to experience something totally new, there are sports getaways here to tickle everyone’s interests…
Sports getaways don’t get much more iconic than a trip to Wimbledon in London. The biggest grass court tennis tournament on Earth, this extravaganza ushers in the summer every year. It runs from the end of June/start of July for two weeks, ending mid-July every year.
Think Pimm’s, strawberries and cream and lounging on a lawn (when the British weather allows). And also think about the world’s biggest tennis stars taking to the court in their Wimbledon whites.
You can get tickets by Public Ballot, which opens in September, or take your chances in the famous Queue, where you can actually score tickets on the day! There are always some available, but of course you won’t always be lucky enough to get one.
Another UK sports event and possibly the cheesiest of all sports getaways, the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll takes place every year on the spring bank holiday in Gloucester, England.
This quirky, long-standing tradition has been on a roll since at least 1826 and sees competitors chasing a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down a 180m-long hill. And this is no ordinary wheel of cheese, with it usually weighing in between 3 and 4kgs.
The cheese hasn’t been caught yet, but the winner of the day is the first person across the finish line. You might think this is all fun and games, but actually spectators can get hurt when this hefty cheese hurtles down the hill. Past winners have hailed from Egypt, New Zealand, Belgium, Japan, the USA and so many other places. So will the next winner be you?
Speaking of fast wheels, the Indy 500 is a must-visit destination for any big motor racing fan. Taking place at the back end of May each year, it’s one of the highlights of the racing calendar. In fact, it’s the largest single-day sports events in the whole world, with around 350,000 spectators flocking to see the action each year.
They all come to see 33 competitors race around the famous Indy Speedway and it’s always an adrenaline-filled day. Fancy going? If you went to the previous year’s race, you’ll get first refusal on tickets for the next. But as there’s so many tickets going, plenty of newbies should get a shot at gaining entry too.
And if you miss the famous Indy 500, there’s always something thrilling on to keep you interested.
Ever thought about rugby sports getaways in Asia? Well Hong Kong Sevens combines a thirst for travel with some serious sporting prowess.
Typically taking place in late March or early April, you can see some serious rugby talent play out with 30 teams playing across 72 games. And over a hundred thousand fans will join you to ring in the action.
Major teams from around the globe take part, including Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Australia, Fiji and, of course, Hong Kong itself. It’d be a shame not to see the host nation, after all.
If all this talk about sports getaways has got you in the mood to place a bet, we’ve got some good options for you. We’re loving bet365 (bonus code bet365), 888 and William Hill in particular for their great promotions and competitive odds. Just don’t be surprised if cheese rolling isn’t on their list of markets, they can’t cover everything!
