What is a Banker Bet?

A Banker Bet refers to a selection that is deemed by the bettor as a “sure thing” or a highly probable outcome. In multiple-selection or accumulator bets (accas), the bettor will place their faith in the banker selection, which must win for the overall bet to succeed.

Essentially, if the banker fails, the entire bet collapses, even if all other selections win.

This type of bet is particularly appealing to those who like multiple-selection bets and the flexibility afforded by combining banker bet selections, usually of lower value odds, with higher-risk selections and where you can back the different potential combinations of banker and standard selections on your bet.

Banker Bets

How Does a Banker Bet Work?

At Bet365, when creating an accumulator bet or a multiple, you have the option to mark certain selections as “bankers.” These are the bets you feel most confident will win, and therefore, they form the foundation of your bet.

However, it is important to understand that selecting a banker does not boost the odds, but rather alters the number of different potential combinations you can cover with a unit stake in your bet.

When you mark one or more selections as bankers, Bet365 assumes that these bets will come through.

For example, if you have five selections and make one of them a banker, the overall payout will be calculated assuming that this banker wins, and the other selections are then accumulated. If you lose on your banker, the entire bet loses regardless of the outcome of the other selections.

The Role of Bankers in Accumulator Bets

An accumulator bet is a wager where all the selections must win for you to receive a payout. The odds of all selections are multiplied together, leading to a significantly higher payout compared to individual bets. However, the risk is that if one selection fails, the entire bet is lost.

Bankers in accumulator bets are chosen as the most likely outcomes and provide a level of confidence that at least a portion of the bet has a strong chance of winning. If you are placing a six-fold accumulator, and you mark two selections as bankers, those two events are assumed to be secure wins.

The idea is to balance high-risk and high-reward bets with safe bets, offering a middle ground between safety and higher returns.

However, it should be noted that selecting banker bet options on a standard accumulator bet doesn’t really influence the bet a great deal. You still only pay one unit stake and you still need all selections, including the banker or bankers to win.

The Banker Bet concept begins to make more sense when you decide to place different types of combination bets from your selections of bankers and non-banker bets.

The Role of Bankers in Combination Bets

Banker Bets

In the example of an accumulator above, we used a six-fold accumulator bet as our example. Let’s use the same six selections with two banker bets and look at the different combination bets available.

When you select two bankers from the six selections, you then have a choice of the following bets you can cover.

  • Two Banker Bets plus any one of the other four selections to win (four bets in total)
  • Two Banker Bets plus any two of the other four selections to win (six bets in total)
  • Two Banker Bets plus any three of the other four selections to win (four bets in total)
  • Two Banker Bets plus all four of the other selections to win (one bet in total – an accumulator)

On bet365, a form of shorthand is used to indicate the four Banker Bet options above based on the selections. The shorthand below corresponds to each of the four types of bet in the same order.

  • 2B + 1/4 (4 bets)
  • 2B + 2/4 (6 bets)
  • 2B + 3/4 (4 bets)
  • 2B + 4/4 (1 bet)

What is exciting for the customer with Banker Bets in combo bets is that you don’t have to back every option. You may decide just to back the 2B + 1/4 option (4 bets), or maybe the 2B + 1/4 and the 2B + 2/4 options (10 bets). You can combine these bets as you like, covering just one, two, three or all options.

Banker Bets

Furthermore, if you alter the number of Banker Bets in your selection you can increase or decrease the number of lines you need to cover in a bet.

For example, if we decided to back a third Banker bet from our six selections above, then we would only need to cover the following options:

  • 3B + 1/3 (3 bets)
  • 3B + 2/3 (3 bets)
  • 3B + 3/3 (1 bet)

A total of seven bets with three different options a punter could back with their trio of bankers.

But conversely, if we reduced the number of banker bets from two selections down to one, then there would be an increase in potential betting options and lines you need to cover as shown below.

  • 1B + 1/5 (5 bets)
  • 1B + 2/5 (10 bets)
  • 1B + 3/5 (10 bets)
  • 1B + 4/5 (5 bets)
  • 1B + 5/5 (1 bet)

With one banker bet selected from six selections, there are five betting options available and a total of 31 lines in total that can be covered.

This is what makes Banker Bets so appealing – they offer customers a huge amount of flexibility as to how they structure the bet to allow for more options and more lines, or fewer options and fewer lines to cover.

  • Mark Bankers: Once you have the Banker Bet section open, you can start marking certain selections as bankers. This is done by checking the banker box (marked with a ‘B’) next to the chosen bet.
Banker Bets
  • Enter Your Stake: After marking the bankers, enter your stake for the bets you wish to cover. You will notice that the combinations and number of lines of your bets change as you add or remove bankers.
Banker Bets
  • Confirm the Bet: Double-check your selections and confirm the bet. Your Banker Bet is now placed!

Example of a Banker Bet

Let’s look at an example to understand the Banker Bet better:

Imagine you have the following selections in your bet slip:

  • Match 1: Team A to win at odds of 1.50
  • Match 2: Team B to win at odds of 2.00
  • Match 3: Team C to win at odds of 2.50

Now, if you mark Match 1 as a banker, your bet slip will be structured in a way that assumes Team A wins. The payout for your bet will now depend on Matches 2 and 3 and which lines you covered with your bet.

Losing Outcomes

  • If Match 1 fails, your entire bet fails.
  • If Match 1 wins, but the other two matches lose, then your bet fails.

Possible Winning & Losing Outcomes if you Bet On the 1B + 1/2 Options

  • If Match 1 wins and Match 2 wins but Match 3 loses, then your 1B + Match 2 bet wins, but your 1B + Match 3 bet loses.
  • If Match 1 wins and Match 3 wins but Match 2 loses, then your 1B + Match 3 bet wins, but your 1B + Match 2 bet loses.
  • If Match 1 wins and both Match 2 and Match 3 wins, then both your 1B and Match 2 and 1B and Match 3 bets win.

Possible Outcomes if you bet on the 1B + 2/2 Option

  • You need all three matches to win to win the 1B + 2/2 option. If any match loses, banker bet or not, then this bet is a loser.

Benefits of Using Banker Bets

Banker Bets are extremely popular among bettors for several reasons:

  1. Increased Flexibility in Betting: Banker Bets allow you to include multiple events in a bet while controlling the risk. By adding bankers, you can build a safer bet without compromising the entire wager.
  2. Boosting Returns: In theory, choosing a banker should allow for better odds when combined with other selections. If used strategically, it can balance out riskier selections, offering the potential for high returns.
  3. Customization: Banker Bets enable bettors to customize their strategy by focusing on strong, almost guaranteed selections while allowing them to take a chance on underdogs or less certain events.
  4. Strategic Planning: Placing a banker in your accumulator provides a sense of security. By marking a highly likely event as a banker, you reduce the risk of a wipeout. This makes it easier to plan bets in a strategic and structured way.

The Risks of Banker Bets

As much as Banker Bets offer a sense of security, they are not without risks. Here are a few potential downsides to consider:

  1. All or Nothing: If your banker selection fails, the entire bet loses, even if all other selections win. This means that despite your strategic approach, there is always the chance of a complete loss.
  2. False Sense of Security: Bettors often place too much faith in a single selection, leading them to think a banker is a guaranteed win. However, in the world of sports betting, nothing is ever a certainty. A team that seems unbeatable could suffer from unexpected circumstances like injuries, poor form, or red cards, which could lead to the loss of the banker.
  3. Lower Odds for the Banker: Many bettors place low odds as bankers since these selections are considered more secure. However, low odds mean reduced value, and marking a low-odds selection as a banker may not substantially improve the overall potential payout of the accumulator.

Strategies for Successful Banker Bets

To maximize your success with Banker Bets, it’s important to adopt strategic betting practices. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Do Your Research: When placing a Banker Bet, it is essential to conduct thorough research. Consider factors such as recent form, head-to-head history, team news, injuries, and any other relevant information that could influence the outcome of the event.
  2. Be Selective with Bankers: Not every bet should be a banker. Choose your banker selections carefully, and only mark those outcomes you are truly confident will win. Avoid including bankers just to boost your accumulator’s overall value.
  3. Avoid Too Many Bankers: Placing too many bankers in a single bet can reduce the effectiveness of the strategy. The more bankers you add, the more difficult it becomes to make a high-value return, as the payout might diminish.
  4. Use Bankers for Security, Not Greed: Bankers should be used to provide a safety net for your riskier selections, not as a means to increase potential winnings. Balance your bet by pairing lower-risk bankers with higher-risk selections.
  5. Stay Informed About In-Play Options: At Bet365, in-play betting allows you to adapt your Banker Bets as events unfold. If your banker is part of a live game, you can monitor the match’s progress and adjust your strategy in real-time, cashing out if necessary.
