The Super Cup traditionally pits the Champions League winner against the Europa League champion, giving both clubs an opportunity to claim the first major piece of European silverware of the new season.

Villa, meanwhile, have a little Super Cup history of their own. Their only previous appearance came following their famous 1982 European Cup triumph, when they defeated Barcelona over two legs to win the trophy.
Winning the Champions League once was historic for PSG. Doing it again immediately established Luis Enrique's team as the dominant force in European club football.
Paris successfully defended their Champions League crown in May, defeating Arsenal after a dramatic final in Budapest.
Arsenal struck first through Kai Havertz, but PSG eventually found an equaliser through Ousmane Dembélé. Neither side could produce a winner through extra time, sending the final to penalties.
PSG prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.
It continued a remarkable run for a club that spent years chasing Champions League glory before finally breaking through.
The frightening part for opponents is that PSG's success has increasingly become less dependent on one superstar.
Players such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Vitinha, João Neves, Nuno Mendes, Achraf Hakimi and Désiré Doué give Luis Enrique an athletic and technically gifted core capable of overwhelming opponents with both possession and pressure.

Villa's route to Salzburg was different but no less impressive.
Unai Emery's team captured the Europa League by beating Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul, delivering Aston Villa's first European trophy since 1982.
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring before Emiliano Buendía doubled Villa's advantage shortly before halftime. Morgan Rogers then added a third after the break to effectively put the final away.
The victory was another reminder of Emery's extraordinary record in the Europa League.
More importantly for Villa, it represented another major step in the club's transformation from Premier League outsider into a legitimate European contender.
Villa have increasingly looked comfortable on the biggest stages, and their previous meetings with PSG provide plenty of evidence that they won't be intimidated by the French champions.
If the Super Cup comes anywhere close to their previous meetings, supporters could be in for another memorable night.
PSG and Aston Villa met in the quarter-finals of the 2024-25 Champions League.
Paris won the first leg 3-1, leaving Villa facing a huge challenge when the teams returned to Villa Park.
Things initially got worse.
Goals from Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes put PSG 2-0 ahead on the night and seemingly ended any hope of a comeback.

Trying to beat PSG begins with figuring out how to deal with their midfield.
That is much easier said than done.
Vitinha has developed into one of Europe's premier midfield controllers, while João Neves brings energy, aggression and technical quality alongside him.
When PSG establish possession, they are exceptionally difficult to press.
They can play through pressure, move opponents around and then accelerate suddenly when space appears.
For Aston Villa, allowing PSG to comfortably dictate possession could turn the match into a long evening.
Emery may instead look for his midfield to remain compact and force PSG into wider areas before attempting to counterattack quickly.
There aren't many players Villa will need to watch more carefully than Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
The Georgian winger gives PSG something that is increasingly rare: a player capable of completely changing a match through an individual action.
Kvaratskhelia can attack defenders from either side, cut inside to shoot or create opportunities for teammates.
That presents an obvious dilemma.
Give him space and he can attack directly.
Commit additional defenders toward him and PSG suddenly have openings elsewhere.
Villa's defensive shape — particularly how they defend PSG's wide players — could ultimately determine whether this match remains competitive.

PSG deserve to enter the match as favourites, but writing Villa off would be dangerous.
Emery is one of Europe's most experienced knockout managers and has repeatedly shown an ability to devise specific tactical plans for individual opponents.
Villa also don't necessarily need to dominate possession to create chances.
They are capable of attacking quickly through midfield and exploiting the spaces left behind when opposing full-backs move forward.
That could be particularly important against PSG.
Hakimi and Mendes are major attacking weapons for Paris, but their willingness to push forward can create counterattacking opportunities.
Villa's challenge will be surviving PSG's pressure long enough to exploit them.
There is another storyline worth watching.
Emery managed PSG from 2016 to 2018, winning Ligue 1 as well as several domestic cups before leaving the club.
His reputation in European competition has only grown since then.
Emery has become synonymous with the Europa League, and his ability to prepare teams for knockout football has made him one of the most respected tournament managers in Europe.
Beating PSG for another European trophy would add yet another chapter to that reputation.
One area where Paris should have a significant advantage is depth.
The Super Cup arrives unusually early in the season, meaning fitness levels aren't necessarily going to be where they will be in October or November.
That makes substitutions particularly important.
PSG can introduce elite attacking players without dramatically changing their style.
For Villa, staying competitive through the opening hour may be crucial. If PSG are able to increase the tempo against tiring legs late in the second half, their depth could become decisive.
This isn't exactly the same Villa team that lifted the Europa League trophy in May.
Morgan Rogers' departure represents a significant loss after his importance to Villa's attack last season, while the squad has undergone additional changes during the summer.
Villa have attempted to refresh the group, including the addition of João Gomes to strengthen midfield.

How quickly can Emery integrate the new pieces?
PSG have the advantage of continuity within Luis Enrique's system. Villa may still be discovering exactly what their best version looks like for 2026-27.
Villa cannot allow PSG's midfield to dictate the entire match.
If Vitinha continually receives the ball with time and space, Paris will eventually begin creating openings.
Villa need to make the middle of the pitch uncomfortable.
Hakimi and Mendes give PSG tremendous width going forward.
Villa must decide when to track them and when to exploit the space they leave behind.
One well-timed counterattack could completely change the match.
This might be the most fascinating matchup of all.
Luis Enrique wants PSG to control matches through possession, positioning and relentless pressure.
Emery is perfectly comfortable allowing an opponent to have the ball if his team remains organised and dangerous on the counter.
Whichever manager succeeds in imposing his preferred type of match will have a major advantage.
PSG should have more possession.
That doesn't necessarily mean the match will be one-sided.
Villa's best path probably involves staying compact, avoiding early mistakes and forcing PSG to become impatient. If they can keep the score level deep into the match, the pressure increasingly shifts toward the favourites.
An early PSG goal changes everything.
Villa would then have to open up, potentially creating exactly the type of space Paris' attackers want.
That makes the opening 20 to 30 minutes especially important.
Aston Villa have already shown they can trouble PSG.
Their 3-2 victory at Villa Park in 2025 demonstrated that Emery's side can create chances against the French champions, and Villa's Europa League triumph should give them even more belief.
But PSG's combination of midfield quality, attacking options and squad depth gives them the edge.
Villa should make this competitive, particularly if they can keep PSG from scoring early.
Over 90 minutes, however, Paris simply have more ways to win.
