There was a great deal to enjoy this past weekend in the Bundesliga, Bayern, Dortmund, Red Bull Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen all recorded key wins at the top of the table, while at the bottom, Augsburg and Werder Bremen have improved their chances of avoiding the drop with two very important and perhaps unexpected away wins over teams in the top half.

There was also drama in Cologne where Fortuna Dusseldorf, who were leading 2-0 with less than three minutes to go, conceded twice in that time and injury time in order to toss away their lead and in doing so Cologne scraped a 2-2 draw. This week, the focus turns to the top of the table in the midweek set of games as the top two lock horns in what is viewed by many as a potential Bundesliga title decider as Dortmund host Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening.

Let’s now recap how things went over the weekend in the Bundesliga ahead of the midweek games and our big Dortmund v Bayern Munich preview.

Bundesliga Weekend Results

  • Hertha Berlin 4-0 Union Berlin
  • SC Freiburg 0-1 Werder Bremen
  • Paderborn 1-1 Hoffenheim
  • Wolfsburg 0-2 Borussia Dortmund
  • Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-3 Bayer Leverkusen
  • Bayern Munich 5-2 Eintracht Frankfurt
  • Schalke 04 0-3 Augsburg
  • Mainz 0-5 Red Bull Leipzig
  • Cologne 2-2 Fortuna Dusseldorf

There were plenty of goals this weekend with two of the top five recording thumping wins. Bayern stayed four points clear at the top with a 5-2 home win over Frankfurt while Red Bull ended their winless run with a fine 5-0 away win at Mainz, adding to their 8-0 home win over the same team from earlier in the season. Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen also recorded good wins on the road, Leverkusen leapfrogging Borussia Moenchengladbach in the table thanks to their 3-1 win at Borussia-Park.

At the other end of the table, Werder Bremen and Augsburg were the big winners, picking up valuable wins over Freiburg and Schalke respectively, while Fortuna Dusseldorf threw away a 2-0 lead in the last three minutes at Cologne to end up drawing 2-2. Hertha Berlin likely made themselves safe from the drop with their 4-0 derby victory over Union Berlin on Friday night.

Bundesliga Title Decider Preview

Although there are eight other games on Tuesday and Wednesday night this week, and the likes of Red Bull Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen may have other ideas, Tuesday night’s 5.30pm kick off between Dortmund and Bayern Munich looks likely to be a potential Bundesliga title decider. Let’s now preview this game in more detail.

Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich

  • Venue – Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund)
  • Kick Off – 5.30pm GMT
  • Dortmund Form – WWWWWW (2nd – 57 points from 27 games)
  • Bayern Form – WWWWWW (1st – 61 point from 27 games)
  • Last Meeting – Bayern Munich 4-0 Borussia Dortmund (Nov 2019)

Dortmund have won the last two home matches between the two teams, 2-0 and 3-2 in the past two seasons, but Bayern Munich have by far the better record of the two over a slightly longer period and have recorded some thumping home wins over Dortmund in that time, including a 4-0 win this season, 5-0 last and 6-0 the season before.

Predicted Teams

Borussia Dortmund Predicted XI (5-4-1) – Burki (Gk), Hakimi (DMr), Guerriero (DMl), Hummels (Dc), Piszcek (Dc), Akanji (Dc), Can (Mc), Dahoud (Mc), Brandt (AMl), Sancho (AMr), Haaland (Ac)

I can see Dortmund recalling Emre Can to midfield ahead of Thomas Delaney for this game, while Jadon Sancho, who has been a substitute in the first two games since the return of the Bundesliga, may well have been kept back for this must-win tie. Marco Reus and Axel Witsel will both likely miss out but I can’t see Dortmund making too many changes after two solid wins in their last two games, with no goals conceded. Hummels should play, despite being substituted at the weekend as a precaution with a potential Achilles injury.

Bayern Munich Predicted XI – (4-2-3-1) – Neuer (Gk), Pavard (Dr), Davies (Dl), Alaba (Dc), Boateng (Dc), Kimmich (Mc), Goretzka (Mc), Gnabri (AMl), Muller (AMc), Coman (AMr), Lewandowski (Ac)

Bayern Munich will be without Philippe Coutinho and Constantin Tolisso for this game, while defender Sule could also miss out due to a lack of match fitness. Their main worry though is Thiago, who missed the weekend win over Frankfurt and who is touch and go as to whether they will be ready for this game. Leon Goretzka could continue to deputise in midfield if that is the case. Other than that, it looks likely to be a familiar line up for Bayern with Gnabri coming into the team to add pace into the attack.

Top Tips for the Game

  • Match Result – Draw – 10/3 or Draw and Both Teams to Score – 7/2
  • Anytime Goalscorer – Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) – 5/4
  • Correct Score – Dortmund 2-2 Bayern Munich – 10/1

While Dortmund’s need for a win is much greater, and they do have home advantage and a big name striker now, you cannot ignore Bayern’s form since Hansi Muller took over as coach. 46 points from a possible 48 is a stunning return and that means that they are incredibly difficult to beat. Only Red Bull Leipzig, who drew 0-0 in Munich have taken points from them recently and while I’d like to see Dortmund win to keep the league more interesting, I can’t quite see them having enough. As such, I think the draw is the sensible bet here, and I’ve backed a 2-2 finish with Serge Gnabry of Bayern Munich amongst the scorers.

Remaining Bundesliga Midweek Fixtures and Acca Predictions

  • Werder Bremen v Borussia Moenchengladbach – Draw
  • Eintracht Frankfurt v SC Freiburg – Draw
  • Bayer Leverkusen v Wolfsburg – Home Win
  • Red Bull Leipzig v Hertha Berlin – Home Win
  • Augsburg v Paderborn – Home Win
  • Union Berlin v Mainz – Home Win
  • Hoffenheim v Cologne – Away Win
  • Fortuna Dusseldorf v Schalke 04 – Home Win

Putting these selections together with a draw between Dortmund and Munich into an accumulator at bet365 would see you earn a potential return of 4032.41/1. This means a £10 bet, if a winner, would see you win £40,324.10.
