Currently we are in the middle of the semifinals for the Europa League, with four teams battling it out for
a place in Friday night’s final in Germany. However, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week, the two German and two French teams that remain the Champions League will be battling it out for a place in the final of the most prestigious of UEFA’s club competitions.
That game will take place on Sunday night and it means that whichever two teams out of Red Bull Leipzig or Paris St Germain as well as Bayern Munich or Lyon, will be competing to see their name engraved on the most prestigious trophy in world football. Of course, two big games of this magnitude always attract plenty of interest in the betting markets too and this is what we will be paying particular attention to in this article.

Let’s now take a quick look at the two semifinals set to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this week, with the final taking place on Sunday night between the two victors in both those crunch games.
Champions League Semifinals
Tue 18th Aug – Paris St Germain v Red Bull Leipzig
The Road to the Semifinals
Paris St Germain
- Group Stage – Won Group A (5 wins 1 draw, 17 goals, 2 conceded, 16 Points)
- Round of 16 – Beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 on aggregate (1-2, 2-0)
- Quarterfinals – Beat Atalanta 2-1
- Total Record – Played 9, Won 7, Drawn 1, Lost 1, Scored 22, Conceded 5
- Top Scorer – Kylian Mbappe/Mauro Icardi – 5 Goals
Paris St Germain came through top of a group that included Real Madrid and despite losing the first leg
of their Round of 16 tie to Dortmund, they earned a 2-0 win in Paris to progress. They were fortunate against Atalanta, scoring two late goals against the young Italian side to claim a 2-1 win, where the second half introduction of Kylian Mbappe, back from injury, proved absolutely crucial in turning the game in Paris’ favour.
Red Bull Leipzig
- Group Stage – Won Group G (3 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, 10 goals, 8 conceded, 11 Points)
- Round of 16 – Beat Tottenham 4-0 on aggregate (1-0, 3-0)
- Quarterfinals – Beat Atletico Madrid 2-1
- Total Record – Played 9, Won 6, Drawn 2, Lost 1, Scored 16, Conceded 9)
- Top Scorer – Daniel Olmo – 6 Goals
After winning Group G ahead of Lyon, Red Bull hadn’t really given any indication of how strong they could be in this tournament, but a 4-0 aggregate win over last year’s beaten finalists Tottenham was evidence that they could more than cope at this level. A superb performance, arguably their best in the tournament, saw them fully deserve their 2-1 win over Atletico in the quarterfinals and coach Julian Nagelsman is confident his side can cause PSG plenty of problems.
Paris St Germain v Red Bull Leipzig – Our Tips
For me, these are two of the best defensive outfits in the competition and as such, I don’t see this game being one which sees one side run away with it by several goals. Without Mbappe, I would have questioned PSG’s chances a little, but the French superstar looked fit and strong coming off the bench against Atalanta and he changed that game around. I can see him starting from the bench again here to gain more fitness for the final and based on the quality of Mbappe and Neymar alone, I think PSG will do enough to claim a place in the final.
- PSG to win – 8/11
- Correct Score – Paris St Germain 2-1 Red Bull Leipzig – 15/2
- Anytime Goalscorer – Neymar (Paris St Germain) – 11/10
Wed 19th Aug – Bayern Munich v Lyon
The Road to the semifinals
Bayern Munich
- Group Stage – Won Group B (6 wins, 24 Goals, 5 Conceded, 18 points)
- Round of 16 – Beat Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate (3-0, 4-1)
- Quarterfinals – Beat Barcelona 8-2
- Total Record – Played 9, Won 9, Drawn 0, Lost 0, Scored 39, Conceded 8
- Top Scorer – Robert Lewandowski – 14 Goals
Bayern’s perfect record of 9 wins from 9 games in the Champions League is incredible, but so is the
huge 39 goals scored by the juggernaut from Germany. With Man City now out, perhaps only PSG could stop Bayern landing another Champions League title. After smashing Chelsea and Barcelona out of the park in the last two rounds, the German side are now odds on to win the trophy outright having won 27 and drawn one of their last 28 games in all competitions.
Lyon
- Group Stage – 2nd in Group G (2 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses, 9 goals, 8 conceded, 8 Points)
- Round of 16 – Beat Juventus 2-2 on Away Goals (1-0, 1-2)
- Quarterfinals – Beat Manchester City 3-1
- Total Record – Played 9, Won 4, Drawn 2, Lost 3, Scored 14, Conceded 11
- Top Scorer – Memphis Depay – 6 Goals
Lyon may have benefitted from some questionable tactical choices by Pep Guardiola against Man City in the last round, but they took their chances in that game superbly. Qualifying second behind Red Bull Leipzig, Lyon have defied the odds twice now in the knockout phase, knocking out Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus and competition favourites Manchester City on their way into a semifinal against the all-conquering Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich v Lyon – Our Tips
Lyon have done extraordinarily well to reach this far and have upset the odds twice to do that, but I think their good fortune and good play won’t be enough against this Bayern side. Hansi Flick’s team look unstoppable and not only that, they look like scoring plenty of goals no matter who they are facing. As such, I am expecting Bayern to earn another very solid win here by a few goals to make the final.
- Bayern Munich to win – 1/5
- Correct Score – Bayern Munich 4-1 Lyon – 12/1
- Anytime Goalscorer – Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) – 20/21
