Welcome to our collection of the funniest cricket stories of all-time!
In sport, controversy is often good. But there’s also plenty to enjoy about a moment that makes you smile.
In a game like cricket, which has a very staid, laid back, gentlemanly reputation, when funny things happen, they are all the more amusing.
Whether it’s a player getting things wrong on the field, a commentator fluffing his lines, an umpire having a mare. It’s all good fodder for the sports blooper editors.
And while the exciting summer Ashes series is over, there’s still lots to enjoy with the County Championship. Additionally bet365 Sport will be busy taking bets on the forthcoming Cricket World Cup in India in October.

Therefore, in our latest list of ten of the best, we are looking at the funniest cricket stories.
However, and it is rare that we do this, I must give you a warning that some of the stories here are not for those of a gentle disposition!
So, if you are offended by swearing, even redacted, then we’d advice you to follow one of the links above!
For the rest of you hardy souls, read on!
20/20 Finals day is always an enjoyable day for the fans as cricket unleashes itself for a bit of fun.
Three years ago in 2019, part of the entertainment included Lancashire legends Freddy Flintoff and David “Bumble” Lloyd in fancy dress singing the Neil Diamond classic Sweet Caroline.
All was going well as the pair heartily burst into song until Freddy received a camera on a selfie stick, which he walked backwards with.
Unfortunately, Freddy didn’t see the sound system speaker on the floor, but tumbled beautifully into a backward roll back into a standing position in one movement.
The BBC’s coverage of cricket has provided us with some classic moments of commentary from the likes of Jonathan Agnew and the fantastic and sorely missed Brian Johnston.
In this fantastic snippet, Agnew is explaining how Kevin Pietersen’s bat handle rubber covering had come off, and it needed to be replaced.
However, he wasn’t quite careful enough with his words, much to the amusement of those listening in and in the studio!
I do hope that this story is not apocryphal as it is a classic example of one of the funniest cricket stories!
The story goes that West Indian batting legend Viv Richards was having an unusually tough time for Somerset against one particular bowler; Greg Thomas of Glamorgan.
After struggling with a few balls, the Welsh bowler turned around to Richards and said “It’s red, it’s round, you hit it!”
Richards said nothing, and on the very next ball, he smashed it for six before adding for the perfect flourish:
“You know what it looks like, now go and get it.”
Sometimes, it is not the action on the field that people expect that turns into a classic moment.
Australian TV’s coverage of an Ashes test match saw one of the camera team, called Joe, use a segway to get close to the action on the ground.
Only Joe got a little too close to the ground as you can see from the video clip!
Still, at least Joe gives us one of the funniest cricket stories we've seen in a while!
Friday 9th August 1991, England facing the West Indies and at the end of the day Brian Johnson was summing up what had happened.
Unfortunately, one of the players had been given out when stumbling backwards over the stumps, he tried to step over the wickets but caught it with the inside of his leg.
I am not going to say any more other than this clip is viewed as one of the best-ever and with good reason.
If you love a good giggle, listen to this, as it has gone down in legend as one of the funniest cricket stories and moments in the history of broadcasting!
In the build up to the 1991 test series between Australia and Pakistan, Pakistani batsman Javed Miandad had been rather unkind about the moustachioed fast bowler Merv Hughes.
So much so that he labelled him a “fat bus conductor” in an interview ahead of the test.
Hughes didn’t respond with his own words and vowed to get revenge with the ball.
He duly did and as Miandad walked back to the pavilion, Hughes could not resist having a little dig stating “Ticket’s, please!” to the departing batsman.
We think it is one of the funniest cricket stories, but we're not sure Merv Hughes did!
One of the most subtle wind ups in cricket history. Jonathan Aggers read a ‘press release’ from the ICC which stated that matches in the 1970s against a Rest of the World team, would be expunged from the records.
Geoff Boycott was not happy when hearing this, calling it “Tripe” and “Daft” especially when he realised his 100th, hundred didn’t take place at his beloved Headingly.
Furthermore, Boycott had arranged a charity day to celebrate the date of his 100th hundred. Aggers took great delighted in pointing out that this was now wrong, to which Boycott began to meltdown.
Then when the big reveal comes, there’s hilarity in the studio, while Boycott can’t swear as he is still on the radio!
A classic wind-up of a legend and now one of the funniest cricket stories of all time!
Glenn McGrath was one of the best bowlers in Australian cricket history, and there’s been no shortage of great bowlers from down under.
However, McGrath was also known for his sledging and to wind up his opponents and he spared nobody. His name is often mentioned in relation to some of the funniest cricket stories.
Against Zimbabwe, Glenn McGrath was bowling against Eddo Brandes, a fast-bowler of some repute, but one who was a tad on the chunky side.
McGrath was not one to let this pass without comment, the seamer asking Brandes “Why are you so fat?”
Brandes produced the immortal response “Because every time I sleep with your wife, she gives me a biscuit.” Only he used a more salty epithet than ‘sleep with’!
McGrath’s response unfortunately is not recorded!
Cramp is no fun. As someone who has suffered with it from time to time, it is hellishly painful.
However, it is hugely funny when you are fine and someone else is rolling around in agony.
Poor Mark Richardson was the victim here as he attempted a sweep shot against India, only to suffer from cramp midway through the shot.
The scream is still echoing around the stadium, as is the hilarity that ensued in the commentary box.
“This is probably one of the finniest things you’ll see in test cricket history,” said the commentator and he wasn’t wrong!
Then when the stretcher comes out…there isn’t a face in the video not laughing!
Truly one of the funniest cricket stories ever!
Sometimes, the best sledges don’t always come against the opposition. Yorkshire legend Fiery Freddie Trueman was known for having a short fuse, especially if fielders dropped chances off his bowling.
For the last of our funniest cricket stories, Trueman bowled a beauty which the batsman edged to first slip where fielder Raman Subba Row was stood waiting.
However unfortunately for Row, the ball flew through his legs without him catching it.
At the end of the over, Row approaches the unhappy Trueman to apologise.
“I should have kept my legs together, Fred” offered Row as an apology.
“So should’ve your f***ing mother!” stated Trueman in response! Brutal!
And we’ll leave you with some other funniest cricket stories that didn’t quite make the list!
