Welcome to our round up of the latest news from the poker tables and we begin this week with a look at one of the undoubted poker greats, Phil Hellmuth, and his decision to ‘rescind’ on a promise that he would use $300,000 of his own money at the Super High Stakes Live Stream tables, such as those on Hustler Casino Live or Live at the Bike.

The decision came after the Poker Brat suffered his two biggest live stream losses within a few days of each other.

On the Monday at Live at the Bike, Hellmuth rage quit the game after losing a hand that included $144,500 of his own money.

Then just a two days later, Hellmuth then beat his own record live stream loss set on the Monday while filming Live at the Bike, this time losing $194,000.

That second loss was enough to send Hellmuth into a downward spiral where he cancelled everything and jetted off back home.

That news left Kevin Rob Martin (Kmart) angry after he had accepted an invitation from Hellmuth to play with him following the filming and had gathered $100k to play with, plus paid travel and expenses, plus promoting the show to his online community.

However to be fair to Hellmuth, he did reschedule the dates and offered to pay for Kmart’s travel expenses for the trip in a follow-up Tweet.

Hellmuth has since stated he will return to cash games in the PokerGO No Gamble No Future games but in a video explained why he is no longer going to buy in with $300,000 of his own money.

“Too Painful”

In a Tweet and an accompanying video, Hellmuth explained how losing the $144,500 while holding a pair of Kings finally made up his mind to rescind the offer.

“It was too painful losing $140,000 w K-K last Monday, in one hand! I will buy in for whatever I choose. If I want to sell a piece of get staked, I will do that. I am free!”

That Tweet started something of a spat on Twitter with a number high stakes players joining in the conversation including Daniel Negreanu who tweeted in response:

Most of the gripes made about Hellmuth playing at the high stakes tables is his tendency to sit down at the table with between 10 and 25BB with Hellmuth playing very tight and somewhat conservatively in an attempt to make money.

A fact which according to some, makes these games boring.

Since quitting Live At The Bike a couple of weeks ago, Hellmuth has not been back to play, but he will return this week in a Deep Stack No Limit game.

It will be interesting to see how he approaches this game and what happens at the end if he ends up making another loss.

Rapper Drake Tops Hellmuth Losses After Drake’s Curse Strikes Again

Canadian rapper Drake is well known for his string of successful hits both as a promoter and performer and throughout his music career, he has earned millions of dollars.

With plenty in the bank, Drake has also shown that he is a somewhat avid sports bettor and while perhaps not on the scale of ‘Mattress Mack’ Jim McIngvale, or South African businessman Kerry Packer, the rapper star is not afraid to put his money where his mouth is.

Unfortunately for Drake, that has seen him lose a fair bit in losing bets, so much so that some of the people Drake has backed to win, only to lose, have accused him, comedically, of having a “Drake’s Curse” on his bets.

Now, that is not necessarily true. Drake has won big on a number of events, including a win of over half a million dollars on a series of 9 bets on the Super Bowl back in February.

However, this weekend, the Drake’s Curse struck again when the rapper lost $400,000 when backing Jake Paul to defeat Tommy Fury by knockout in their bout in Saudi Arabia.

It’s not known whether Drake rage quit the match, although he wasn’t alone in losing a fair chunk of cash on the match as World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, Tommy’s half-brother, revealed that he too had lost money on the bout.
