In the Post-Draft Glow Which Teams Chances at Superbowl Glory have Improved?

This past weekend saw one of the more unusual drafts. Not only did we see Roger Goodell in a t-shirt and scoffing a jar full of M&M’s but we also saw players in their homes celebrating the fact that they had been signed up by one of the 32 teams in the NFL.

This rather homely approach is in direct contrast to the usual glitz, glamour and neon-lit NFL Draft each year and many people warmed to the new approach. Certainly, the fans of teams who the experts reckon had a very strong draft may well be hoping that their team could well go on to make a real fist of challenging for the Superbowl when the season resumes in September.

With Free Agency seeing some very interesting moves, including Tom Brady’s switch to Tampa Bay, followed by ex-Patriot team mate Rob Gronkowski coming out of retirement to join him in Florida next season, it means that this next season in the NFL is shaping up to be a hugely interesting one.

How did Free Agency go in the NFL?

There have already been a number of major moves in the NFL ahead of the weekend’s draft with Free Agency seeing plenty of players on the move, with a large number also being given the franchise tag with their team, or re-signing with their current employers.

Amongst those opting for the latter include Drew Brees (New Orleans), Amari Cooper (Dallas), Arik Armstead (San Francisco), Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee) and Anthony Castonzo (Indianapolis) all re-signing with their current teams.

Franchise tags have been placed on Dak Prescott (Dallas), Chris Kones (Kansas City), A.J.Green (Cincinnatti), Shaquil Barrett (Tampa), Anthony Harris (Minnesota), Justin Simmons (Denver), Brandon Scherff (Washington), Yannick Ngakou (Jacksonville), Brad Dupree (Pittsburgh), Derrick Henry (Tennessee) and Leonard Willians (NY Giants).

The biggest moves see Tom Brady join the Tampa Bay Buccanneers, Philip Rivers joins the Indianapolis Colts, Chris Harris leaves Denver for the Los Angeles Chargers, Byron Jones leaves Dallas for Miami, while Teddy Bridgwater leaves the Saints for the Carolina Panthers.

A number of players remain unsigned including Jadeveon Clowney, Jameis Winston, Logan Ryan, Jason Peters and Eli Apple.

The NFL Draft 2020

While it is too early to say how the Draft picks made in 2020 will turn out, and there is always a massive change in what the experts expect will be the best players in the draft, compared to the players that actually go on to prove their mettle in their first season in the NFL, but on early indications, it seems a number of teams including Baltimore, Cincinnatti, Cleveland, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Arizona, Dallas, Denver and the two LA Teams, the Rams and Chargers all enjoyed excellent drafts.

However, experts were not so impressed by the picks of the Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders and the New England Patriots.

Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, but we can use the information from the teams performances last season, Free Agency players leaving the club and those signing, plus how the team performed in the draft to perhaps come up with some of the teams to watch in the 2020-21 NFL Season.

Who to watch this season in the NFL?

Baltimore Ravens (13/2)

The Tennessee Titans may have done a number on the Ravens in the playoffs last season, but they Ravens will be back stronger than ever this season. Having franchised Matt Judon, they signed the huge defensive end Calais Campbell from Jacksonville, as well as shoring up three more defensive players in Jimmy Smith, Jihad Ward and Derek Wolfe. Add to that another excellent draft by GM Eric DeCosta which included first round pick linebacker Patrick Queen from LSU and two great late round additions in James Proche (wide receiver) and safety Geno Stone and Baltimore look set to be real contenders in the AFC once again.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11/1)

The odds on Tampa winning the Superbowl have been slashed after the most exciting Free Agency in the team’s history. Not only did the team claim Tom Brady from New England, but they persuaded his favourite target, retired Tight End Rob Gronkowski to suit up for another year with him. With the likes of Ndamukong Suh, Ryan Smith, Jason Pierre-Paul and Blaine Gabbert re-signing with the team and Edge Rusher Shaquil Barrett given the Franchise tag, a decent draft means that this could be the most interesting team in the NFL this year.

Buffalo Bills (20/1)

The Bills reached the playoffs last season and on the back of a solid Free Agency and excellent draft, they could be the team to potentially end New England’s hold on the AFC North. The first round pick trade for wide receiver Stefon Diggs was a brave and bld move, while the likes of Addison, Butler, Gaines, Jefferson and quarterback Josh Norman signing were solid moves. Could this be the start of a more positive period for success starved Bills fans?

Tennessee Titans (25/1)

The surprise team of last season who crept into the playoffs and then made their mark defeating both New England and Baltimore in the AFC before losing to eventual Superbowl Champions Kansas City in the AFC Championship game. With Derrick Henry franchise tagged and Ryan Tannehill re-signed on a four-year contract, both key pieces of their offense should be back in play this season. If Vic Beasley can give them greater presence as an edge rusher and Kristian Fulton comes in to do a good job at cornerback, then with first round pick Isaiah Wilson joining the O-line to replace the departed Jack Conklin, the Titans could well be better value than their 25/1 odds suggest.
