As is now the case at Olympic Football tournaments, the male and female venues will be the same.
Seven venues across France will be used for the Paris Olympics 2024 Football Tournament. They include the home stadia of some of the country's most famous football teams.
They are:
The final of both the men’s and women’s tournaments will take place on the 9th (men’s) and 10th (women’s) of August 2024 at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
A bronze medal match will also be contested between the two losing semi-finalists. The men’s bronze match will be played on the 8th of August at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes.
The women’s bronze medal match will take place in Lyon on the 9th of August.
Football has been a part of every Olympic games bar two, the first games in 1896 and the 1932 games. However, the teams that competed in the tournament have changed over the years.
In 1900 and 1904, club teams represented countries, but from 1908 to 1964, this was replaced by national teams. From 1968 to 1980, only national amateur teams were allowed to compete.
In 1984 and 1988 national teams, but with restrictions from UEFA and CONMEBOL were allowed, but in 1992, this was changed to U23 national teams only being allowed to compete.
In 1996, this was changed to u23 teams with three overage players. This has remained the rules ever since.
As a non-FIFA event, this means that many teams can stop players from representing their country in the Olympics if they wish.
Hungary and Great Britain have the most wins in the event with three apiece. Brazil have earned the most medals with 7 medals in total (2 gold, 3 silver and two bronze).
Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and the Soviet Union have won the gold medal twice while a number of countries have one gold medal to their name: – Yugoslavia, Spain, Poland, East Germany, Nigeria, Czechoslovakia, France, Italy, Sweden, Mexico, Belgium, Canada and Cameroon.
The men’s tournament has a total of 16 teams qualified for the Olympics. They have been drawn into four groups of four teams.
Each team plays one Group Stage match against the other three teams in their group. The top two teams from each of the four groups qualify for the quarterfinals.
The three Group Stage matches will be played on the same three dates for all groups, they are:
From the quarterfinals thereon, all matches are played to a conclusion with extra time and penalties, if required, used to determine the winner.
The dates for the knockout phase are as follows:
The groups for the initial stage of the Paris Olympics 2024 men's football tournament are as follows:
You can get the following pre-tournament odds on all the 16 teams competing in the men’s tournament at the Paris Olympics 2024.
For me, this tournament is between three teams. France, Spain and Argentina. France have a very strong squad and benefit from being the home team. Spain are always strong but their squad is very inexperienced. Argentina have a strong squad, but they won’t get much support from local fans after their recent antics at the Copa America. As such, I am backing France to land the win here at 3.25.
Just a dozen teams earned the qualifying spots for the Paris Olympics 2024 Women’s Football Tournament. Which means just four will be eliminated at the Group Stage of the tournament.
One of the teams qualified are current gold medal holders Canada, who will be keen to be amongst the medals once again in what looks like being a very competitive tournament.
Let’s take a look back at the history and some of the past winners of the women’s football tournament at the Olympics.
The women’s football tournament at the Olympics was established in 1996 and has remained part of the Olympic Games ever since.
In truth, the women’s tournament is more prestigious than the men's. That is because it is a full international tournament for women’s teams. In contrast, the men’s events are largely a U23 tournament, with just three overage players permitted per squad.
Just four teams have ever won a gold medal. Canada, Germany and Norway have won once each, while the United States have won four gold medals in this team event.
The full list of winners, runners up and bronze medallists is shown below:
The 12 teams have been drawn into three groups of four.
They will play each of the other teams in their group once during the group stages.
Group Stage fixtures will be played on the 25th, 28th and 31st of July for all groups.
The top two teams in each group, along with the two best third-placed teams will go on to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
From the quarterfinals onwards, all matches are played to a conclusion with extra time and penalties used to decide the winner in the event of a draw.
The dates for the knockout phase ties are: –
The groups have been drawn as follows:
The latest betting odds for the Women’s Olympic Football tournament are as follows: –
France will have their supporters to win the women’s tournament, and the United States always do well in the Olympics, but for me Spain are the team to beat. The World Champions have been the best team in the world for a couple of years now, and I’d back them to prove that again with a gold medal here. Especially at odds of 3.0.
