The way you play poker depends on a lot of different things. One big one is your position on the table. And today, we're going to examine the middle position in poker.
Whether you're playing at home with friends, online at bet365 (bet365 bonus code here) or in some far flung casino on vacation, these facts still apply.
Alright, so this is the most obvious thing. Middle position in poker simply when you're not in either the early or late positions.
Whether you're playing tournaments or cash games, there's just one middle position on a six max table. And that's the hijack position, aka two positions to the right of the button.
As well as the hijack position, when you're playing on a nine-max table, the two positions immediately to the right of hijack are also middle. They're commonly called lojack and middle position one.
On average, and played relatively smartly, players in middle position in poker usually at least break even. Yes, you don't have the advantages of being in late position, but it's a heck of a lot better than being in early position. Of course, when playing nine-handed, lojack is in a better position than hijack and middle position one is a little more privileged than lojack. But you won't have to be jealous for long, your time will come to experience all those mid positions!
The middle position in poker is typically not the smartest place from which to go around stealing blinds. Although if there are really tight players at the table, you could give it a shot. But as a rule of thumb, leave it alone.
In middle position in poker, you should keep a possible showdown in mind. So we'd only recommend playing with something relatively decent. We're talking any pair, A9 suited and above, 56 suited and above, J9 suited and above, KQ off suit and above and AJ off suit and above.
If you've got a pretty strong hand, an aggressive open raise in this position does make sense. However, because there are so many players to act after you, make sure you don't sneak into loose territory or you could get burned.
If the players who are in late position tend to limp a whole lot, you could try a little pre-flop raise in order to try and force them to fold. Of course, this is a risky move. They could have a strong hand this time. So we wouldn't suggest to do this very often or with a massive bluff. However, if you manage to pull it off and the players in the cut off and button fold, then hey presto, suddenly you're in late position for the rest of the hand.
