People go bananas for being in late position in poker.
Late position is where you're in the dealer position. It's also known as being on the button. Basically, it means that you're the last player to act during that poker hand.
It is by far the preferred position for pretty much every player, whether you're playing at home with friends, on bet365 (bonus code here) or even in a fancy poker room overseas. That's because it gives you so many different advantages. You can alter the way you play and maximize your chances of winning more pots, compared to being in other positions.
When you're in late position in poker, it gives you the advantage of being about to see how all the other players are acting in that hand before you make your decisions. This gives you extra information before you decide to bet, raise, re-raise, call or, indeed, fold.
Because you have the advantage of position compared to your opponents, you can afford to play a little looser in your playing style. As a rule of thumb, when you're in late position, you can play basically anything that's kind of valuable. So any two cards that are both above 10, any pocket pairs, any two consecutive cards that are suited.
Late positions in poker are the perfect spot to pull off a bluff. In order to do a good, thought out bluff, you need to have lots of information and make sure you're not walking into a stupid situation. Particularly if you're new to bluffing, we'd recommend trying out your first few bluffs in a late position.
If there are a load of players who've limped into the pot before it comes to you, you can steal that pot and blow them out of the water with a big raise. Again, this is all the benefit of knowing what others are doing and making informed decisions based on that.
Alternatively, when faced with a load of limpers, just do a little raise. That way the limping masses will probably just go for it because they're already invested and the pot gets a little sweeter on the way.
Usually, we're not big fans of limping. It can come across kind of weak. However, the best time to do it really is when you're in late position in poker. When a lot of players are in the pot and they've got a tonne of chips, they might end up checking on the flop if the cards aren't friendly to them. When you see player after player checking, it's your chance to steal the pot post-flop with a decent raise.
