With a lot to get through, let’s now take a look at the Week One results.
The Giants had no answer to a dominant Dallas defense who kept the home team from scoring and who played a key role in laying the foundations for this statement win against a Divisional rival on the road.
Brock Purdy continued where he left off last season, Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk both had huge days too as the 49ers comfortably swept aside the much-fancied Steelers. The 49ers look very much the team to beat in the NFC, even in these earliest weeks of the season.
Aaron Rodgers achilles injury after just four snaps as a Jet seemed to hand the initiative to the Bills, but the Jets rallied with their defense in particular being very impressive to snatch an overtime win thanks to Xavier Gipson’s incredible punt return in overtime.
If 2023 is to be the year the Bengals break through into the Super Bowl then they will need to put this awful result behind them. The Browns comfortably won the battle of Ohio in all three phases in what was a very poor Bengals showing.
Most pundits fancied the Seahawks to be the main challengers to the 49ers in the NFC West, but after the Rams produced a fine display to beat the Seahawks 30-13 in Seattle, could the Rams make a surprise return to relevance in that division?
Brian Daboll will be looking long and hard at his team after they suffered a miserable opening day defeat and duck egg against the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants were off the pace in all three phases and they cannot afford to do that against any team, let alone a powerful Dallas squad.
NFL Betting Tip – Eagles looked solid, if unspectacular against the Patriots, but they should find it easier at home against a Vikings offense that stumbled several times against the Bucs. (Eagles – 5/16)
NFL Betting Tip – Both these teams started with impressive wins against divisional rivals. The Falcons came out on top in a closer battle with Panthers than the Packers had against the Bears. Jordan Love looked solid for Green Bay but I think the Falcons may take this one at home (Falcons – Evens)
NFL Betting Tip – A good win for the Raiders over the Broncos last week was a pleasant surprise for their fans. The Bills lost a close one to the Jets in overtime, but I expect the home fans to see their team return to winning ways here. (Bills – 1/4)
NFL Betting Tip – The Bengals were very poor last week against the Browns, and against another divisional opponent here, they really can’t afford to lose. The Ravens though came through well against Houston and I think they could well spring a surprise here and pick up the win (Ravens – 8/5)
NFL Betting Tip – The Seahawks were well beaten by the Rams last week and they now face a tough trip to Motor City to face a Lions team bouncing after their win over the Chiefs. Can Detroit defeat another playoff team from last year? I think they can. (Lions – 5/13)
NFL Betting Tip – Arguably the two weakest AFC South teams, but both showed some signs of life last week despite defeats. Two rookie QBs take centre stage here in what will be an interesting match up but one I think the Colts defense may just tip in their favour. (Colts – 5/6)
NFL Betting Tip – After a surprise defeat to the Lions last week, the Chiefs now have a tough trip to Jacksonville to take on a quickly improving Jaguars team. This will be a closely fought contest and while the Jags could win it, I am backing the Chiefs to take their first win of the season here. (Chiefs – 20/31)
NFL Betting Tip – I was surprised the Bucs landed a win last week, and also that the Bears were not in the contest with the Packers. Home field advantage gives Baker Mayfield a chance to earn himself some more fans after a good first game. (Buccaneers – 20/33)
NFL Betting Tip – The Titans don’t have a good record against the Chargers and with their issues at QB rearing its head last week, it is hard to see how the Titans can keep pace with the freescoring Chargers with Justin Herbert at QB. (Chargers – 5/8)
NFL Betting Tip – The Giants can’t do any worse than last week and while the Cardinals pushed the Commanders hard, they still fell short. I think this week the real New York will stand up and be counted in Arizona. (Giants – 10/21)
NFL Betting Tip – The Rams returned to form with a big win over Seattle last week. However, the 49ers were superb in dismantling the Steelers and it is difficult to see the Rams having enough to beat them here. (49ers – 10/37)
NFL Betting Tip – Two of the most impressive performers, certainly on defense, meet in a Week 2 cracker in Dallas. Without Rodgers, it is hard to see the Jets having enough on offense to earn enough points to win here. (Cowboys – OTB)
NFL Betting Tip – The Broncos lost narrowly to the Raiders last week and the Commanders are a similar team to Las Vegas. Sam Howell had an impressive QB performance for Washington last week and I think he could be the difference maker here (Commanders – 167/100)
NFL Betting Tip – The Patriots defense kept them in the game against the Eagles last week and they may do the same again here, but I would expect the Dolphins to take the win after that morale-boosting victory over the Chargers last week. (Dolphins – 20/27)
NFL Betting Tip – The Saints were narrow winners over the Titans in a close one in Louisiana. The Panthers went down to the Falcons, but on Bryce Young’s home debut, I think the Panthers will claim the win here. (Panthers – 7/5)
NFL Betting Tip – The Steelers can’t afford to go 0-2 in what will be a tough division. However, they may well do that against an impressive Browns who put the Bengals to the sword last weekend (Browns – 10/13)
