Mikel Arteta has brought in some big new names for the Gunners this pre-season with Gabriel Jesus and Olexander Zinchenko arriving from Manchester City and Fabio Vieira arriving from Porto. Add to that youngster Marquinhos and Matt Turner, and the Gunners look much more capable of sustaining a real challenge for the top four, although I feel they may just miss out on that aim.
Steven Gerrard has been making a major overhaul of the Villa squad in recent times and he has brought in some quality players both last season and during the pre-season period here too. This Villa side should benefit from a pre-season together and I feel that they are certainly ready to take the step into the top half of the EPL this season.
Scott Parker did very well to bring Bournemouth back up at the first attempt but I don’t see the development in this squad to take them from being a Championship contender to a team that is capable of staying in the Premier League next season.
The Bees were excellent last season and survived in the Premier League comfortably in the end. I think Thomas Frank is an excellent manager but they will miss Christian Eriksen in midfield and as such, I think they’ll stay roughly in the same position they finished last season.
Graham Potter’s Brighton side played some of the best football in the Premier League last season outside if Man City and Liverpool and I think that the Seagulls are set to do well again and I’d be surprised if they don’t finish in the top half of the table once again, which would be a fantastic achievement.
Last season, Chelsea’s season ended with their owner quitting the club, a new owner coming in and the club unable to re-sign players or sell tickets. Those issues are now sorted and I’d expect Thomas Tuchel’s team to be pushing for the Champions League spots once again, though I feel they may still be a little way off the top two just yet.
I like the way Patrick Vieira is moulding this team into a strong outfit, but I still feel that they are a couple of top quality players away from being a top ten team, but they will likely finish just outside that, well clear of the relegation battle.
I think Everton fans are going to be concerned about their teams lack of transfer activity. James Tarkowski has come in, but that is it and having lost Richarlison to Spurs, I think the Blues are in for another worrying season of struggle, but they should just be good enough to stay up. Just.
Marco Silva has already had experience of taking a team up to the Premier League and that should stand him in good stead here. He will have learned from that and I think Fulham will get the benefit of that experience. As such, I think the Londoners may well surprise a few teams here and perform relatively well in the top division and will be the best of the promoted teams.
Leeds hung on to their Premier League status last season, but only just and Jesse Marsch has brought in some new faces to help his team out, but losing Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips is a very big blow and means that the Elland Road side may be in a relegation dogfight once again this season.
I really thought this post-season, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers would make a number of changes given how inconsistent his team were last season. However that, as yet, hasn’t been the case and I feel that Leicester are going to struggle because of that as the team needs to freshen itself up a bit.
Sadio Mane has moved on but Darwin Nunez promises to be an exciting signing offering Liverpool a new way to play in attack. I think Nunez makes this Liverpool side stronger, but I just feel in midfield they are not quite on a par with City and in the bigger games, that may prove to be their undoing in the title race.
Erling Haaland’s arrival gives City their new number 9 going forward and puts all other Premier League teams on alert that City are going to be very hot in pursuit of a third straight league title. How big is Haaland? Without him, I think Liverpool win the league. With him, I think City will score too many goals for even the Reds to be able to overhaul them.
Erik Ten Haag seems to be winning over United fans from their pre-season performances but this team still has some way to go to catch the teams that finished above them last season. United will improve, but I think it will be a very slight improvement in terms of points, though maybe not in actual finishing position in the table.
The new owners have refrained from splashing huge amounts of cash over the post-season period but they have brought in some talent in the likes of Sven Botman and Nick Pope, both of whom will be great signings for the team. With the progress made by Eddie Howe last season, I think a season where Newcastle finish in the top half is very much on the cards.
Steve Cooper has made a lot of signings for his Forest team’s first season back in the Premier League, but I think maybe he has made too many and disrupted the harmony at the club. This reminds me of Fulham doing likewise a couple of years ago and that ended in relegation back to the Championship and I fear that may be Forest’s fate this season too.
I look at the deals Southampton have made this off-season and I am of the opinion that they could really struggle this year. I don’t see where the goals are going to come from for the Saints and if they can’t score, and defensively they are not great, then my feeling is that they could well be the surprise team to head down this season.
I think Antonio Conte has done a fantastic job improving his Tottenham squad over the post-season period and I really think that with the players they have brought in, Spurs are going to force themselves into the top three this season, though they still may be a little off the pace being set by the top two.
I think David Moyes has done some very smart business this post-season and I think West Ham will be a better team for it. Whether they can match their strong performance of last season, I am not so sure as many of the teams around them have made some big improvements, but I am confident they will be pushing hard for a European spot once again.
I don’t really see the major changes Wolves needed to make a major step up the Premier League table this season, so I think the Midland side will once again be hovering around the midway mark in the Premier League table, in no danger of relegation but perhaps not quite good enough to push on towards the European qualification spots.
So how do the predictions above translate into a Premier League table for the coming season? Here’s how I see things turning out:
