You may recall a little while back, after the 2022 World Cup Finals in Qatar had been completed, we brought you our team of the tournament, which featured a first choice XI as well as a number of players to make up the squad.

So now as we reach the end of the year, it is time for me to wish you a very Happy New Year and all the best for 2023!

And with that in mind, we are going to take a look back at the year 2022 in terms of the Premier League. Which players have shone since January, and which players have been good enough to make it into our 2022 Premier League Team of the year?

Of course, this means we are taking in the second half of the 2021/22 season plus the first 16 or so games of the season of the 2022/23 season, which is a bit unusual but does give scope for different selection options compared to the usual team of the year compiled in May.

As always, bet365 Sport offers extensive Premier League betting throughout the season and there’s even plenty of games to enjoy over the New Year period with two matchdays running from the 30th December right the way through to the 5th January.

So if you have been following the Premier League this year, do you agree with the selections we’ve made for our dream team and squad?

We’re going to go with a 4-3-3 formation for this team to ensure that we can play the players that we feel deserve the call up.

Premier League Team Of 2022

  • Goalkeeper – Alisson (Liverpool)

Alisson has not only made numerous key saves for Liverpool, especially when they struggled in the second half of 2022, but he has also assisted with goals (notably against Manchester City) and his performances have been rock solid for club and country. He is arguably the best in the world at present.

  • Right Back – Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Unfairly picked out because of perceived defensive shortcomings, Alexander-Arnold is a prodigious talent who is creative and dangerous going forward. Something England lacked at the World Cup but what is an absolutely fundamental part of how his Liverpool team play.

  • Left Back – Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

An outstanding attacking full back who is arguably City’s third most creative player behind the likes of De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. Happy to play either flank as a full back so he is in the team at left back here with little serious competition for that place in the team.

  • Central Defender 1 – Ben White (Arsenal)

He may have been sent home from England duty at the World Cup, but Ben White has been a stalwart defender for Arsenal throughout 2022 playing either at centre back or right back equally well and with a high degree of quality.

  • Central Defender 2 – Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool)

Van Dijk may not have the turn of pace that he once had, but he still has the knowhow when it comes to getting the best of strikers. He remains the yardstick by which other defenders in this division are measured and is still one of the very best in his position in the world.

  • Defensive Midfielder – Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United)

You can almost trace Newcastle’s huge improvement back to the arrival of the Brazilian midfielder from Lyon back in the January transfer window. He has become one of the best defensive midfielders in the league while playing a huge offensive role too for his club.

  • Attacking Midfielder 1 – Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Once again, you cannot have a Best Premier League team without including Manchester City’s brilliant Belgian. Without doubt the best box-to-box, creative and imaginative midfielder in the world at present and a fundamental part of Pep Guardiola’s Champions. He is the first name on the team sheet.

  • Attacking Midfielder 2 – Martin Odegaard (Arsenal)

After a successful loan spell Martin Odegaard has come in at Arsenal and made a name for himself as the Gunners attacking midfielder. He has been superb leading the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table at present and his form this season is as good as any attacking midfielder in world football.

  • Left Forward – Phil Foden (Manchester City)

There were a few good options here but I think Phil Foden deserves his place in this team. A mercurial talent, the England man is another of a hugely talented group of players who are just on the fringes of the England team. For me, he is England’s most talented and creative player and he has been precisely that for Manchester City.

  • Right Forward – Mo Salah (Liverpool)

It hasn’t been the very best year for Mo Salah in a Liverpool and Egypt shirt, but even on a down year, the Egyptian king has weighed in with plenty of goals and he played a key role in Liverpool almost winning everything last season. On his day, he is still one of the best players in the world.

  • Centre Forward – Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

He’s only been in the Premier League since August but such has his impact been that you cannot pick anybody else ahead of Erling Braut Haaland. The Manchester City man has amassed 18 goals in just 13 Premier League games, 24 goals in 19 games in all competitions. We’ve not seen a strike rate like that since the days of Jimmy Greaves. He is a special, special talent.
