Nothing beats kicking back with a big bowl of snacks and something great on the box. And very few things rival the drama of a really good sports movie. You can quote us on that one!
An excellent sports movie balances gripping stories with the naturally gripping world of sports. There's so much jeopardy in every great match, game or race. It's no wonder when expert writers, directors and actors translate that onto the big screen it's a recipe for success.
But are you stumped about what sports movie you should watch next? Well we've got you. Here are a list of just a few of our favorites…
If you grew up in the 1990s, we're going to bet that you've watched Cool Runnings more than a couple of times. Released in 1993, this film follows the incredible story of how a Jamaican bobsleigh team fought to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics. And yes, Jamaica doesn't even have snow. It's hilarious, lighthearted and a whole lot of fun. You're going to cheer them on every step of the way.
Dealing with lots of tricky topics, Remember the Titans is a sports movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Far from the glitz of the NFL, this follows the story of how a high school football team battled racial adversity on and off the field. Although released in 2000, this true story is set in the 1970s. Denzel Washington is just one standout in an amazing cast.
Rocky. Such an iconic series of films. There is literally nothing not to love about these thrilling watches. And if you're wondering where to start, watch the debut film in the series. Rocky burst onto cinema screens in 1976. Starring Sylvester Stallone, it's a classic underdog tale of someone trying to punch above his weight (yes, pun intended!). It's genuinely a brilliant watch, but you could watch it just for the training montages alone.
Based on a true story, the 2011 movie Moneyball shows that paying attention in math class really does pay off sometimes… This is the true story of how the Oakland As used sabermetrics to build a successful baseball team on a shoestring budget. It's full of heart and Brad Pitt. What else could you want?
Do you love the Olympics? Then we bet our bottom dollar you'll be glued to this sports movie… Chariots of Fire is an incredible film. Set a century ago during the 1924 Paris Olympics, here you can see Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell compete on the track for much more than just a gold medal. Personal beliefs and a dedication to athletics run through this movie. And the cinematography of this 1981 flick is second to none.
Seabiscuit is the rousing tale of an overlooked race horse who warmed hearts during the Great Depression by rising to unexpected success. Enormously popular, this 2003 film stars Tobey Maguire among others and was nominated for a whopping seven Academy Awards. A critics hit as well as a fan favorite, this is a sports movie with a lot of gumpshin.
