What is the Europa Conference League?
The Europa Conference League followed the establishment of the Champions League and Europa League as the third tier of club competition across Europe.
Founded only in 2021, the tournament was developed primarily to offer more competitive football for the lower-ranked club teams of European football nations.
These teams would often be eliminated from the preliminary round of the Champions League and Europa League. To allow them a chance to play and develop against teams around their ability, the Europa Conference League was founded.
In contrast to the other two UEFA club competitions, top nations only enter one team directly, with others potentially dropping into the tournament from the Europa League.
After an extensive preliminary round, there is a group stage and after the group stages, there is a single round of playoff games, followed by the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.
