Do you know all about the Gaelic Athletic Association yet? Well if the answer is no, it’s high time you learned, as the GAA 2022 finals are just around the corner.

Yes, we might be a little biased as we’re writing this from Ireland. But having said that, we think if you’re fond of a thrilling sport, you’re going to love the story of the GAA. And, more importantly, the incredible sportsmanship you can witness on the pitch.

What is the GAA?

The Gaelic Athletic Association, also known as the GAA, is an amature sporting body in Ireland. But it’s also much more than that. It’s raison d’etre is to promote Irish culture. So along with being the home of native Irish sports, it also promotes the Irish language (nothing like English, if you’re wondering) and Irish traditional music and dance.

Having said that, the sports are the biggest draw.

What sports does the GAA promote?

The five sports the GAA promotes are hurling, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball, rounders and camogie (which is like hurling in some respects, but played exclusively by women). The most popular of these two sports are hurling and football. And lucky for you, those GAA 2022 finals are just around the corner!

Despite the nation being obsessed with these games and attending matches in their thousands, as well as watching at home, all players are amatures and almost all have normal jobs alongside a gruelling training regime. Bank clerks, teachers, etc., during the week and sports stars on the weekend.

A quick introduction to hurling

Hurling is a truly ancient game, with first written records referring to the game back in 1272 BC. It is an incredibly compelling game played with sticks and balls (hurleys and sliotars). It’s also got the distinction of being the fastest game played on grass. In some circles, they also claim its the most skillful.

A quick introduction to football

Because of the Emerald Isle’s proximity to the UK, many people assume that Gaelic football is just like soccer. But in fact, that’s not the case at all. It more closely resembles Aussie Rules than anything else, even though it predates it by quite some time. The ball used during the game is smaller and heavier than a soccer ball, meanwhile the goals are a bit like rugby posts. In order to try score, players can throw or kick. This game is extremely physical and can be rough, at times.

When are the GAA 2022 finals?

The hurling and Gaelic football GAA 2022 finals are both coming up this month. And both of them take place in the historic home of the GAA, Croke Park in Dublin’s northside.

Hurling

The 2022 Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship takes place on Sunday, 17 July. The two competing teams are Kilkenny and Limerick.

Gaelic football

The following week on Sunday, 24 July, you’ve got the football All-Ireland Senior Championship between Kerry and Galway.
