Common poker player types
Most poker players have a little of at least one or two of these traits. These common poker personas reflect both styles of play and the personalities of the players themselves. Maybe it depends on the day, the mood or who your opponents are at the table, but we’d be surprised if you don’t related to some of these common poker types.
Don’t be shy. Take a look and try to diagnose what type of player you are. This will help you see how the other players see you at the table. And knowing that can make all the difference in your next game.
Aggressive
It can be more than a little irritating to have an aggressive player at the table. These are the types of players who never want to back down. They raise and re-raise in an attempt to scare off all the competition.
They can also tend to bluff a whole lot more than the average player too. Their style of play is like a firework. They want to bet big and win big. But a whole lot of the time, they end up blowing up with a bang and leaving the table with zilch.
Passive
On the other hand, passive players like to just wait and see how things play out. They follow the crowd as opposed to jumping in with their own raises. These cautious players are the kinds of players who tend to limp in.
Then perhaps at showdown you’re left scratching your head and wondering why they didn’t get more value out of their hand. Their motto is, “Slow and steady wins the race”. But sometimes they just end up slowly wasting away…
Tight
Those who like to play their cards close to their chest, literally and well as figuratively, are known as tight. These players fold frequently. In fact, they fold much more often than the average player.
That’s because they like to bide their time. Tight players wait until they’ve got a really great set of hole cards before they go ahead and put their money in to see that flop. For that reason, they’re only going to see the flop something like 10-25% of the time.
Loose
Optimistic, excitable and always feeling lucky, loose players are very often either new or very occasional players. They are convinced this next hand is going to be BIG for them. And if it doesn’t work out, there’s always the next won.
They’ve definitely got a “If you’re not in, you can’t win” mentality. And that’s exactly why they end up seeing the flop a whole lot. Depending on the game, they could take a punt on 30-100% of flops. A little different than a tight player, and that’s for sure!
