Understand a Yankee’s eleven lines, total stake, partial-winning returns and each-way cost, with checked examples showing why a return can still mean a loss.
Published: Last updated:
A Yankee combines four selections into eleven bets: six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold. It contains no singles. The important distinction is the unit stake: £1 per line costs £11, not £1 in total. A return from one winning line can still leave an overall loss.
Label four selections A, B, C and D. The doubles are AB, AC, AD, BC, BD and CD. The trebles are ABC, ABD, ACD and BCD. The final line is ABCD. Every selection in a particular line must win for that ordinary win-only line to pay, subject to any void or settlement adjustment.
That structure is confirmed in bet365’s UK Yankee explainer. With no voids, one winner is insufficient because there are no singles. Two winners pay one double; three pay three doubles and one treble; four pay all eleven lines.
| Unit stake per win-only line | Eleven-line total |
|---|---|
| £0.10 | £1.10 |
| £0.50 | £5.50 |
| £1 | £11 |
| £10 | £110 |
If £11 is your intended total win-only stake, £1 per line gives that total. Check the accepted slip rather than assuming a box labelled stake means the whole bet. An each-way Yankee has separately staked win and place parts: £1 each way per line costs £22 overall.
These are hypothetical cash-stake examples, not current bet365 prices. Use decimal prices A = 2.00, B = 3.00, C = 2.00 and D = 4.00, with £1 on each line and £11 total cost. Return includes the winning lines’ stakes; profit or loss is measured against the entire £11.
| Winning selections; others lose | Paying lines | Total return | Net result |
|---|---|---|---|
| None or A only | None | £0 | £11 loss |
| A and C | AC double | £4 | £7 loss |
| B and D | BD double | £12 | £1 profit |
| A, B and C | AB, AC, BC and ABC | £28 | £17 profit |
| B, C and D | BC, BD, CD and BCD | £50 | £39 profit |
| All four | All eleven | £168 | £157 profit |
For all four winners, the six doubles return £44, the four trebles £76 and the four-fold £48. Their sum is £168. This does not mean three winners always guarantee profit: three hypothetical prices of 1.10 would return only £4.961 from the three doubles and one treble before final rounding, below the £11 cost.
The place side uses each selection’s actual qualifying places and place fraction, not its full win price. A runner that places without winning can contribute to the place combinations but not the winning combinations. Check the market’s terms; this article does not assume every selection or sport offers an each-way Yankee.
A void and a loser are different outcomes. bet365’s UK multiple-settlement guidance removes a void selection from an affected multiple. Assess each Yankee line separately; do not simply delete all lines containing the void selection or count a losing selection as void. Non-runners, ante-post conditions, deductions and dead heats can require further checks.
A four-fold accumulator is one line requiring all four remaining selections to win. A Lucky 15 adds four singles to the Yankee’s eleven lines, so £1 per line costs £15. Do not assume a single-winner bonus or other promotional payment applies. Different line counts mean different total stakes.
Our Trixie guide explains the smaller three-selection, four-line structure. The BCP calculator guide covers return versus profit. Neither a combination bet nor a calculator removes the chance of losing the stake.
